Read More	Pioneer Summoned By Death Following a protracted and serious illness of more than six months duration, John Ickler died at the family home in Creighton on his 77th birthday, Sunday, April 17, death being attributable to cancer of the liver. His death was not unexpected and his wife and life companion together with members of the family were in constant attention, giving such comfort as was humanly possible, together with every sustenance afforded by medical science. The removal of John Ickler, by death, from the community marks the passing of another of the old settlers and pioneers to whom is hugely attributable much of the substance of our modern comfort. Through these early settlers who underwent the hazards of pioneer life the nucleus of the community was formed and fostered by their determined will to seize it mature. John Ickler was one of the number of staunch early settlers who had an iron will and determination and to he and others we owe our debt of gratitude. He was a good citizen and his memory will stand forever in the hearts of those who were privileged to know him. The deceased was born in the village of Allendorf, province of Hesse-Nassau, April 17, 1850 and died at Creighton, Nebr. on April 17, 1927 at the age of 77 years. Mr. Ickler spent the first nineteen years of his life in the old county employed at farm labor. His parents, Siebert and Catharine, died at their native province. He came to America in November 1869 and landed in New York. Coming west he found work in Cook county near Chicago for a short time and then went to Chatsworth, Ill., where he remained until near harvest time. From there he journeyed to Omaha and found work in the grain fields a mile or two out of town. Mr. Ickler proved to be very efficient and worked in this vicinity for one and one-half years. With what money he had earned he came to West Point and filed on a homestead nine miles northwest of that city. Later he sold out and rented a farm for a couple of years, after which he came to Knox county, reaching Creighton in November, 1886, before the railroad had been built. He operated a dray line in Creighton for nine years during which time he built a comfortable home for his family. Seeing prosperity in farming he sold out his interests in town and purchased a 160 acre farm 5 miles south of Creighton in Antelope county. On this farm he resided for a period of 27 years, adding to his possessions 480 acres of farm and grazing land. Retaining 200 acres for his own use, he divided the rest between two of his sons and retired from active farming and removed to Creighton and purchased another home. He was united in marriage to Anna Loebel on Oct. 3, 1872 at West Point, Nebr. To this union nine children were born. One daughter dying at the age of 5 years and one son at the age of 14 years. The remaining children are Paul, Fallenner, S.D., Siebert, Wayne, Will, Sterling, Colo., Mrs. Katherine Romain, Mission, S.D., Mrs. Fred Hoffmann, Battle Creek, Mrs. Henry Gruchow, Winnetoon and Mrs. Fred Derflow, Scottsbluff, together with his widow, are left to mourn. Mrs. Ickler has also left to mourn four brothers, Rudolph of Creighton, and three brothers and two sisters in Germany and thirty-three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held this Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home in charge of Rev. Obermeyer, pastor of the Lutheran church and the remains will be interred in the Creighton cemetery.
