Read More	Was Pioneer Minister's Helpmate Mrs. James DePree Last Of Pioneer Bolks Family The daughter of a pioneer, and the wife of another, both ministers of the Reformed church. Mrs. James DePree, who passed on Friday at the home of her son, A. G. De Free, had a life rich in experience and service. Johanna Bolks was the daughter of the late Rev. M. S. Bolks who left Michigan in the 70's to be the first pastor of the Holland settlement in Sioux county. She was born at Hellendoorn, the Netherlands on November 5, 1844. She came with her parents to the United States in 1847 when her father and a large number of his congregation established a Holland collony in Michigan and named it Overeisel for the province in the Netherlands from which they came. In 1870 Miss Bolks was married to Rev. James De Pree, a young minister who as his first charge went to Spring Lake, Mich., to become the first pastor of the newly established Reformed church there. They lived at Spring Lake for ten years and in 1880 followed Mrs. De Pree's parents to Sioux county, where Rev. De Free again became the first pastor of a new church, the First Reformed of Sioux Center. Rev. De Pree was minister of this church for thirty years. Mrs. De Pree was the first president of the Women's Missionary society and continued in that office for thirty years. At the end of that time Rev. De Pree, already advanced in years, but still fired with the pioneer spirit accepted another mission charge at North Yakima, Washington, the most westerly branch of the Reformed church in America, The following year, however, he resigned and retired from the ministry. Rev. and Mrs. De Pree then returned to Sioux Center and established their home here. Six years ago on account of their advancing years and failing health, they went to live at the home of their son, Albert G. De Pree, where Rev. De Pree passed on in May, 1927. His death closed for them a married life extending over a period of 57 years. Mrs. De Pree continued in remarkably good health to within a few days of her death, except that for two years she was handicapped by total blindness. She passed on practically without suffering. She is survived by five children: Mrs. Gerrit Boeyink and Dr. S.B. De Pree, Sioux Center; Rev. J. James De Pree, LeMars; Mrs. Henry Evenhuis, Chicago; Neal De Pree, Maurice; Albert G. De Pree, Sioux Center. One child died in infancy. There are eighteen grandchildren. Mrs. De Pree was the last survivor of the children of Rev. and Mrs. Bolks, and the last of her generation, with the exception of a sister-in-law, Mrs. Wm. Pronk of Sioux Center, who is accounted a dear member of the family. Mr. and Mrs. Evenhuis and sons, Melvin and Norman of Chicago, and Dr. James De Pree also of Chicago, arrived Sunday to attend the funeral services, which were held Monday afternoon at the A. G. De Pree home and at the First Ref. church, in charge of Rev. L. Brunsting. A great concourse of friends joined the relatives in honoring the memory of this splendid pioneer mother.
