Read More	MRS.H.CLAASSEN CALLED BY DEATH FRIDAY MORNING Last Rites For Esteemed Akron Woman Held Tuesday Afternoon Johanna Luschen Claassen was born in Hanover, Germany, February 3 1879, receiving infant baptism in the Lutheran church. The father passed away, leaving the mother and nine children. Several brothers came to America and within a short while provided the means for the rest of the family to join them here. At this time Mrs. Claassen was eleven years old and made her home with the Fredrick Jacobs family, of Preston Township, Plymouth County. She was confirmed in the Preston Township Lutheran Church by Rev. Theo. Meyer. On September 25, 1894, she was united in marriage with Herman Claassen and to this union twelve children were born, four of whom preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband and five daughters, Mrs. Margaret Smikahl, Mrs. Clifford Kilstrom, the Misses Rose and Lula Claassen, of Akron; Mrs. Anna Gillmann, of Sioux City, and three sons, Henry, Gerritt and George, also of Akron. Her entire family, including six grandchildren, were at her bedside when God saw fit to call, her home. A sister in Pipestone, Minn., was unable to attend the funeral on account of ill health, while three brothers, a brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. H. Ricklefs, of Lake Okojoji, many nieces and nephews and friends from a distance were present. Mrs. Claassen was in seemingly good health, had been to the city the day before, was up Friday morning and made plans for her day's work, when she became ill and passed away at 9:45 a.m. August 1, 1941. In 1920 Mrs. Claassen met with an accident, being severely burned, and since then has had a bad heart, and has lived through many sick spells. Words seem very inadequate in expressing the value of the life of this wife and mother so suddenly taken from a devoted family. Her disposition was naturally a happy one. She never complained, and the strong bond which exists in her family proves the love on which she reared them. She was a woman with great tenderness of heart, always doing a kindly deed, in her quiet, unassuming way, and, besides the rearing of her own family, she has mothered six nieces and nephews and a granddaughter, Elaine Smikahl, the relationship becoming very dear between Elaine and her grandmother. The love and -high respect of her relatives and many friends was made manifest by the profusion of beautiful flowers. As their final tribute, a gardenia was sent by Mrs. Clara Nall, of California, and, with another gardenia from Miss Nellie Melheim, at their request were placed upon Mrs. Claassen's breast. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the house, at which time the male quartet sang, "Going Down the Valley," and at the English Lutheran Church at 2:30, Rev. E.G. Svenson officiated at the services, bringing a comforting message, with the thought, "As the Lord giveth, also the Lord taketh away." Miss Nellie Melheim sung, 'Sleep Thy Last Sleep," and the quartet sang two hymns, "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Good-night Down Here and Good-morning Up There." The pallbearers were Fred Claesson, Vern Swift, Rollo Baker, Wm. Blankenburg, R.C. Campbell and Lewis Sprenger. Interment was in Riverside cemetery. Mrs. Claassen was a devout member of her Lutheran Church—a fine type of a living Christian. She will be greatly missed, and the entire community extends deepest sympathy to Mr. Claassen and his bereaved children They have many golden memories to cherish.
