Description	:	Johanna Marie Sorensen was born December 4, 1864, the eldest of eleven children in Yyland, Denmark. Her father was serving in the army in the war with Germany when they took part of Denmark called Schleswig-Halstein when she was born. In Johanna’s home country she hired out to a large farm where she milked cows and learned to make butter and cheese. She also did this in her own home for food for her family and some for exchange for groceries like coffee, sugar and flour. Johanna was married to Anton Peterson, also from Yyland, Denmark. They were married... Read More	Johanna Marie Sorensen was born December 4, 1864, the eldest of eleven children in Yyland, Denmark. Her father was serving in the army in the war with Germany when they took part of Denmark called Schleswig-Halstein when she was born. In Johanna’s home country she hired out to a large farm where she milked cows and learned to make butter and cheese. She also did this in her own home for food for her family and some for exchange for groceries like coffee, sugar and flour. Johanna was married to Anton Peterson, also from Yyland, Denmark. They were married at Boone, Boone County, Iowa on April 1, 1887, shortly after her arrival in the United States. Anton worked on the railroad near Jefferson, Iowa where they made their home until he started farming north of Ogden, Iowa. Here they had five children, their first dying in infancy. In 1902, they shipped their possessions in a box car to North Dakota where Anton filed a homestead in McLean County. Anton was killed on this farm in an accident by a young team of horses in 1911. Johanna stayed on the farm with the help of her two sons, Frielo and Searl, they continued farming. She assisted many of her neighbors in various ways, by baking bread for the Kjorness brothers and also for the Reimers family and she also served as midwife when there was a new baby set to arrive. Many times she attended these births without a doctor present. Johanna died August 25, 1955 at the age of 90 years at the home of her daughter Palma Soderstrom at Washburn. The four children born in Iowa to Anton and Johanna were: Elda, Mabel, Frielo and Searl, their fifth child, Palma was born in North Dakota. Written by Palma Soderstrom.
