Description	:	J. Marie Crooks, a retired Sterling professional portrait and commercial photographer, died Thursday at a Sterling nursing home. She was 89. She was born Jan. 2, 1901 in Denmark, the daughter of Hans Christian and Sena Petra Hansen, and came to the United States as a young child, settling in Nebraska where she married James Howard Crooks, May 27, 1920, in Pierce, Neb. She came to Colorado shortly after her marriage, and launched her photographic career at Fortner's Studio in Sterling, then moved to Fort Morgan, Loveland and Brush prior to returning to Sterling in August 1935. For many years Mrs. Crooks and Ruth Snyder operated the IXL Studio, later Snyder's Studio. Mrs. Crooks received advanced professional photography education at the Eastman Kodak School at Wiona Lake, md. When Mrs. Snyder retired, Mrs. Crooks purchased the firm and in the 1960s sold the business to Robert L. McKay and retired. Mrs. Crooks was a member of the First English Lutheran Church of Brush, past member of the Sterling Quota Club and The Photographers Association of America. She is survived by a son, J. Howard Crooks of Sterling; a sister, Anne K. Brown of Cincinnati, Ohio; a brother, Jim Hansen of Ontario, Calif.; four grandchildren, Johanna Snyder of Bellingham, Wash., Chief Warrant Officer Three John Crooks, serving with the U.S. Army Medical Corps at Fort Carson; David Crooks and Dana Smith, both of Sterling; and three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Crooks and Matthew Crooks, both of Colorado Spring, and Christian Smith of Sterling. Private family graveside services are planned. Chancy-Walters Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
