He died Tuesday, July 10, 1933, at the age of 64 years, 6 months and 29 days. He was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, on December 12, 1868, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Jansen. In 1886, when in his eighteenth year, he emigrated alone, going directly to Wyoming, Jones County, Iowa. After working on farms in that area for a year, he moved to Ida County where he was employed in the Battle Creek community for about one year. Then he left for Woodbury County where he resided from 1888 to his death. For some years he rented farms in the Anthon vicinity, then purchased a farm 2 ½ miles south of Midway, now occupied by his son, Peter B. Jansen. Here on the farm he had resided until the spring of 1923 when he retired from farming. That fall he and his wife and their younger children left for Sioux City to make their home. On October 26, 1893, he married Katherine Wigand. They had nine children, six of whom survive. Those who survive are three sons, Martin of Danbury, Peter of Correctionville and John of Sioux City; three daughters, Mrs. Tom Petersen of Danbury, Mrs. Christ Rossow of Cushing and Miss Caroline of Sioux City. Three daughters, Christina, Alma, and Rose, died in infancy. He also leaves his widow, Katherine, one brother, Andrew Jansen of Anthon, three sisters, Mrs. Mary Hansen of Nora Springs, Iowa, Anna and Martha in Germany, and eleven grandchildren. Short funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday in the Jansen home in Sioux City, followed by services at 1 p.m. in St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Rev. Mathaides, pastor of the church there, preaching in the English language. Then the cortege will leave for Midway Lutheran Church where deceased was a faithful member for many years. Funeral services will be held at 3:15 p.m. with Rev. Mathaides preaching there in the German language, and the Midway pastor, Rev. Gottberg, speaking in English. Burial will be in the family lot in Midway Cemetery under direction of Anthon Funeral Parlors of Sioux City.
