He was 62 years old. Mr. Berry's death was not unexpected. He had suffered severely from kidney trouble, and this in time affected his heart. Mr. Berry was widely known throughout the county, and he had a wide circle of friends. he was public spirited and assisted materially in the advancement of Houston, his home town. John A. Berry was born December 6, 1852, on the old homestead known as the Peach Garden farm, in North Strabane township, lying just east of the borough of Houston, the son of Matthew Berry, who survives at the age of more than 92 years. William Berry, father of Matthew, was one of the pioneers of North Strabane township. John A. Berry remained on the home farm until his marriage at the age of about 26 years, and then moved to Houston, which continued to be his home. For twenty years he was engaged in a general mercantile business. When Houston was surveyed, more than 40 years ago, Mr. Berry helped carry the chain, and he had been active in the affairs of the town ever after. He was interested in having Houston made a borough in 1901. For 16 years he served as postmaster, and for nine years was a member of the borough council. His activity in politics resulted in his being elected County Commisssioner on the Republican ticket in 1908, for a term of three years. In 1911 he was re-elected for a term of four yers. His second term would have expired at the end of 1915. Previous to his election to the commissionership he had filled the office of mercantile appraiser, having been chosen to that office in 1889. Mr. Berry was one of the organizers of the First National Bank of Houston, and at the time of his death was a director and the vice president. In 1877 Mr. Berry was married to Miss Rachel McNutt, daughter of the late William McNutt. Mrs. Berry died February 18, 1909. Two daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Berry, Grace, who died at the age of eight, and Ida May, widow of Smith McConnell. Besides his aged father, who is critically ill, Mr. Berry also is survived by two brothers, W. G. of Pittsburgh, and S. W. of North Strabane township. Washington county is indebted to Mr. Berry for the building of many sections of good roads, the Canonsburg district benefiting in this improvement fully as much as any other section. Mr. Berry was greatly interested in good roads, and with success used his influence during his more than five years as a county commissioner, to advance this important question. Mr. Berry's death came as a shock to his friends. He had not been well recently and was taken to the hospital on April 12th for treatment, and improved until Thursday, April 16th, when his condition grew worse, owing to complications, with a heart trouble which had possibly been organic, but undiscovered.
