John Alfred Bubach was born August 12, 1912 on the family farm south of Litchville, N.D., to Ferdinand and Emma (Hardtke) Bubach. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Griswold (rural Litchville). John attended Gladstone Township School #1. He farmed with his father until he was 21 years old and then operated his own farm in the Griswold community. He served with the U.S. Army in World War II as a jeep and truck driver. He participated in five campaigns in the European Theater of Operations (France, Germany and England) including the Battle of the Bulge. Following the war he returned to his farm, spending summers there and winters in Bismarck with his sisters, Lillie and Alma. In 1961, John moved to Bismarck, where he was employed part time at the North Dakota State Laboratory and did house painting. He married Gladys Legg Erickson on August 6, 1963. During the following years enjoyed fishing, traveling, bowling, playing his organ and gardening. They went on many fishing trips to Canada, drove their camper all over the U.S. and Canada to visit family and friends and to sightsee, went on a four to Asia, and joined a Friendship Force tour of Europe, maintaining close ties with the German couple that hosted them. Shortly after Gladys died on June 19, 1991, John moved to Valley City, where his activities centered around his family and the Senior Center. He played pinochle and whist, shot pool with the guys, danced with the ladies and played in the Kitchen Band. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and Faith Lutheran Church in Valley City. He is survived by his stepchildren, Daryl (Virginia) Erickson, Amhurst, N.H., Sharon (Jerry) Erickson Oothoudt, Camp Verde, Ariz., and Edith Erickson, Alvarez, Nisswa, Minn.; 8 step-grandchildren and his nieces and nephews.
