Wescott, an honored and respected resident of this city, passed away Monday morning, at the age of 60 years. The end came after a protracted period of intense suffering, which had failed, however, to shake the courage or good humor of this sturdy pioneer. Mr. Wescott, had been afflicted with a cancer of the throat for the past three years, and death came as a vast relief. The deceased, while only a resident of this city for two years, had gained a wide acquaintance, all of who were attracted to him by his kindly nature. John A. Wescott was born in Ohio, Jan. 18, 1857, and when a small child came with his parents to Black Hawk County where he had continuously made his home. Being a lover of nature he made a successful farmer and only left the farm on account of failing health. He was married to Miss Mary Brody of Vinton and the enjoyed life together for 40 years, and reared a splended family of five children, all of who were at the bedside when he passed away. The children are, William, of Waterloo; Mrs. Clara Weisart, of Mt. Auburn; Fred and Jake, residing on a farm southeast of town; Everet, at home, who with the widowed mother mourn his loss. He also leaves 11 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon from the late home at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. A.W. Henke, with burial in the Gingrich cemetery.
