JOHN VRTISKA John Alois Vrtiska, the son of Joseph and Teresa Vrtiska, was born on November 5, 1883, on a farm east of Steinauer, Nebraska, and passed away at the Pawnee County Memorial Hospital on August 23, 1960, at the age of 76 years, 8 months and 23 days. He grew to manhood on his father's homestead, and lived there until his marriage to Alma Zelenka, and three children were born to this union; two boys and one girl. After their marriage they moved to a farm near Washington, Kansas, where they lived for one year. They then moved to a farm at Violet and this was their home for 42 years, after which time they moved to a farm north of Pawnee City in 1951. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Alice Hays of DuBois, two sons, Elmer of Pawnee City, and Vernon of Harlan, Iowa. He also leaves five grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, two brothers, Joseph of Pawnee City, Rudolph of Council Bluffs, Iowa, three sisters, Mrs. Mary Steinauer of Steinauer, Mrs. Josephine Seidl of Lincoln, and Mrs. Emma Good of Tecumseh, and many other relatives and friends. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. The funeral service was held at the Wherry Mortuary, Thursday morning, with Rev. W. N. Wallis officiating. Burial was in the Pawnee City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Harland Pattison, Charles Wenzl, Dan Parks, Fred Rinne, Henry Steiner, and Albert Vrtiska.
