Description	:	Johan August Carlsson was born in Frödinge, Kalmar, Sweden, September 29, 1842, the son of Carl Larsson and Stina Lovisa Dahlberg. He was baptized in Frödinge parish on Oct. 2, 1842, his sponsors being Lars Petter Svensson and his wife Anna Jansdotter. He emigrated to America in 1864, settling in Andover, Illinois, where he enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War. The war ended shortly after his enlistment. On July 21, 1866, he married Matilda Westring and they came to Iowa in 1867, living south of Dayton for seven years, then to a farm in Section 30 of Burnside Township where they lived the remainder of their lives. John and Matilda had nine children: Charles, John, Victor, Ida, Frank, Samuel, Emma, Rena and Elmer. John helped in the development of his community and lived to see fruition of pioneer privation into the region. John was widely known for his large apple orchard, and the grafting he did to develop a popular eating apple called the "strawberry apple". Three of John and Matilda's children established homes in the community, Elmer, the youngest, lived on the home farm; Rena (Mrs. Charles Norstrum); and Emma (Mrs. Frank Norstrum), whose husband ran the elevator in Burnside. Carlson, respected old soldier of Burnside township and an old settler of this county passed away suddenly at the A. J. Richardson home at this place Monday night. He had gotten up in the night and went out. The family thought it one of their members and paid no attention to the matter. In the morning, he was found dead by the walk. His funeral will be held this afternoon from the Lutheran Church at 1:30. A host of friends of the family deeply sympathize with them in their sudden bereavement. Dayton Review July 20, 1916 OBITUARY John August Carlson was born in Frödinge, Sweden, September 29, 1842, and passed away in Dayton July 11, 1916, age 73 years, 9 months, 12 days. He grew to young manhood in the land of his birth, and emigrated to this country in 1864, settling in Andover, Illinois, where he enlisted in the Union army of the Civil War. The struggle closed shortly after his enlistment, and he returned to Andover, where he was united in marriage to Miss Matilda Westring, January 21, 1866. She preceded him to that better land October 11th last. In the spring of 1867 they came to Iowa, living south of town seven years, thence to the farm in Burnside township where they lived until their death. Eleven children were born of their union, two of whom preceded him to the land beyond. Six sons and three daughters survive to mourn their father's death. His funeral was held last Thursday afternoon from the Lutheran church of this place, his pastor, Rev. Newman of Burnside, conducting the services, and his remains were laid to rest beside those of his wife in Dayton cemetery. Mr. Carlson was a good neighbor, a loving father, always friendly in his life among his associates. He helped in the development of his community, and lived to see the fruition of pioneer privation into this prosperous region.
