Description	:	John B. McLaughlin is my Great Grandfather. He married Mary Loretta Smith on April 11, 1876 at Preemption, Illinois by the Reverend Thomas Watson. They moved to Sac County in 1879 along with his parents, Allen H. and Lovina McLaughlin. John B. and Mary had seven children: Locke, Herman, Allen, Marion, Willard, Etta (McQuigg), and Nina (Woodke). Herman died young, on August 10, 1903 as the result of being trampeled by a horse. (Source: Schaller Herald article 8/13/1903) Locke married Lois Waddell and they had four children: Lucile (Layman) of Des Moines; Jannette (Ellis) of Schaller; Robert who died in infancy; and Mary (Barber) of Norfolk, Virginia. Allen McLaughlin married Bertha Snell and, after she died, married Winnifred Clift and had no children. He's the only one of this family I never remember meeting. Marion (my Grandfather) married Florence T. Jones and they had three children, Charles, Ruby (Reng), and Irvin. Willard married May Stevens was in the furniture/undertaking business in Schaller and had three children: Mary Florence (Chandler) of Cresco, Iowa, Freeman who died young, and Bertha (Bertie) Harriet (Reinmuth) of Eugene, Oregon. Etta married Henry McQuigg and they had a daughter, Lenore. Nina married George Woodke and they had three children: Willard who died young; Elaine (Lorenzen) of San Gabriel, California; and Harold Woodke who married Carolyn Rutledge and lived in Nemaha. After his first wife died he married his cousin's wife, Sadie (Smith) McLaughlin on August 1, 1923 in Glidden, Iowa. Reverend H. G. Hicks performed the ceremony. She was born May 28, 1868 in DeWitt, Iowa. I don't know when she died. It was a second marriage for both. The only information I have on her is that her parents were Orange Scott Smith, born 11/25/1846 in Butler County, Pennsylvania and died 12/25/1935 in Hawthorne, California, and Mary F. Johnson born 9/23/1848 in Morefield, Ohio and died 10/10/1894 in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania. The above information came from the Schaller,Iowa 1883-1983 Centennial Book and from Marion & Florence McLaughlin's Family Bible Record. His parents, sons (Marion, Willard & Herman) and grandson (Charles Henry) are all buried in the Schaller Cemetery. His Obituary from the May 29, 1941 Sac City Sun written by Naomi Harris states" One of the community's oldest pioneers, J. B. McLaughlin, passed peacefully away at his home early Wednesday morning, May 21. Nature had endowed him with good health all his life, until last September when he suffered a heart attack, his first real illness. Through all the winter months he was confined to his home but recently he was able to walk outdoors a little. Tuesday he became very ill, and Wednesday morning he took his flight to that home which is eternal. John B McLaughlin was born in Mercer County, Illinois, on January 2, 1856 and passed away at the advanced age of 85 years, 4 months and 19 days. Mr. McLaughlin was united in marriage to Mary Smith on April 11, 1876 at Preemption, Illinois, and in the spring of 1879 they came to Schaller from Clinton County, Iowa living on the farm on Section 34, Eureka Township, purchased by his father. To this union 5 sons & 2 daughters were born. After his children were all grown, he and his wife moved to Schaller in 1910 occupying the present W. F. McLaughlin residence. In 1921 Mrs. McLaughlin passed away. After spending several years with the W. F. McLaughlin family who returned to Schaller from Des Moines to keep house for him. Mr. McLaughlin was united in marriage to Mrs. Sadie McLaughlin of Indianola, widow of his cousin, who had been his devoted companion ever since, and who tenderly cared for him to the end. Soon after their marriage they built their present comfortable home. Mr. McLaughlin was converted in a Methodist Church in Illinois at the age of 16 and united with the Methodist Church there. Immediately after his marriage as a young man, family worship was observed and this custom was followed to the end of his life. On coming to this community, there was no town or church and Mr. McLaughlin helped organize and build the first place of worship here, the Methodist church. He was one of the first trustees, and served in that capacity in the building of the first Methodist church, a frame building, and later, the present brick structure, and he contined as a trustee till last September when the quarterly conference conferred on the the honor of 'trustee emeritus.' Funeral services were held at the home and at the First Methodist Church in Schaller on Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Arthur Dyson. Burial was in Schaller Cemetery. The following eulogy to the life of the departed was read at the funeral services. Mr. McLaughlin held the record in years of membership in the local Methodist church. His name and the local Methodist church have been so closely woven together for years, that it is hard to think of this church without the name of J. B. McLaughlin. In his passing, there ends the long list of old timers, who pioneered for the spiritual welfare of the Methodist church. He was faithful to his church, and until the confining sickness last September he was always to be found in church, and his great disappintment was his inability to attend church as formerly. Through all the months of his sickness, his one desire was to attend the church he had given his life for; but providence willed it otherwise. Today his church is a monument to his unfailing efforts to build the kindgdom of God upon the earth, and his 'works do follow him.' Mr. McLaughlin was a man of stirling christian character, and his life has been deeply woven into the community in which he has lived for the past 62 years. A man of deep religious faith and conviction, he labored incessantly for God and His church and for all social and moral values. He possessed a kindly disposition, a cheery heart and among his friends, old and young, he was affectionaly known as 'J. B." His life and his character were his best obituary. He was a noble soul, and his memory will linger long in all our hearts, for 'to live in lives made better by their presence' is not to die. He made earth a brighter place, and on that ressurection morn, we'll meet him, never to say, goodbye. He has laid down the working tools of life, and God has given him an 'inheritance, incorruptable and that fadeth not away.' He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sadie McLaughlin, four sons: W. L. McLaughlin of Glidden, Iowa; Allen McLaughlin of LuVerne,California; J. M. McLaughlin and W. F. McLaughlin of Schaller. Two daughters, Mrs. Henry McQuigg of Sioux City, Iowa and Mrs. Nina Woodke of Schaller. One son, Herman, is deceased. 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Mary Harris of Schaller, two brothers, B. H. McLaughlin of Kirkhoven, Minnesota and F. M. McLaughlin of Albia, Iowa. Two brothers, Joe, who died on the same day 52 years ago and Henry A. who predeceased him in death in 1935." Mr/Mrs. Carl Reng of Dunlap; Mr/Mrs. Delbert Lorenzen of Kingsley; Mr/Mrs Henry McQuigg, Mr/Mrs Loyal Anderson, Henry Harris & Miss Jennie Harris of Sioux City; Will Duart of Estherville; Vernon Hartzel, Mr/Mrs. James Hartzel, Mrs. W. I. The pallbearers were Archie Hartman, J. Mack Schrooeppel, Ed Bakameyer, Alva Mauer, Ed Schaefer and Asa Currie. His Biography begins on Page 773 of the 1914 Sac County History which says he came to Sac County @ 23 when his father traded his Clinton County farm for a section of land in Eureka Township, his father giving him 80 acres of that tract. Later he bought a total of 135 more to make 215. (Of course the wife gets no credit at all!) It says he was a Republican, not active in the Party. It also says he was a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen. Wikipedia says that was a fraternal organization in the U S providing mutual social and financial support after the Civil War.
