Description	:	William Locke, the oldest child of John B. and Mary Loretta Smith McLaughlin was born January 26, 1877 at Preemption, Mercer County, Ill. He passed away January 22, 1965 at the Buena Vista county hospital, Storm Lake, lacking only four days of reaching his 88th year. In 1879 the family came to Sac County and settled on a farm in Eureka township. After completing country school he attended Schaller high school and Buena Vista college. In 1879 the family came to Sac County and settled on a farm in Eureka township. After completing country school he attended Schaller high school and Buena Vista college. On November 6, 1901 he was united in marriage to Lois Blanche Waddell and they celebrated their 63rd anniversary last fall. He is survived by his beloved wife and their daughters; Mrs. C. W. (Lucile) Layman, Des Moines; Mrs. Rowland F. (Janette) Ellis, Schaller; Mrs. Frank O. (Mary) Barber, Norfolk, Va.; a son-in-law, Frank O. Barber; four grandchildren, Susan and Judine Barber, Michael and Phillip Ellis; a brother, J. Marion McLaughlin, Schaller; two sisters, Mrs. Etta McQuigg and Mrs. Nina Woodke, San Gabriel, Calif., and many friends. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Robert Locke, his parents, three brothers, Herman, Allen and Willard and two sons-in-law, C.W. Layman and Rowland F. Ellis. In 1916 the family moved to Glidden. During their residence there Mr. McLaughlin was acting postmaster and postmaster for seventeen years. Seven years ago Mr. and Mrs. McLaughlin returned to Schaller to make their home. Since 1958 he had been employed in the office of Dr. D.H. Gray. He had a heart attack while at the office late in the afternoon of January 19. Since boyhood he had been a member of the Methodist church and served in many capacities in both the Schaller and Glidden churches. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge Haggai No. 369 at Glidden where he was secretary of many years. Mr. McLaughlin took pleasure in being of service to his family, church, friends and community. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him. Services were conducted in the First Methodist church January 25 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Herbert L. Bryant officiating. Mervin Leseth, soloist, was accompanied by Mrs. Leonard Blewitt. Caring for the floral tributes were Mrs. Clarence Parkinson and Mrs. Charles Girardin. Bearers were Dr. D.H. Gray, E.L. Van Buskirk, Clarence Parkinson, Raymond Currie, Douglas Currie and Norman Boisen. Interment was in the Schaller cemetery with the Farber and Otteman funeral home in charge. A Masonic service was held the evening of January 24 in the funeral home. Taken from the Storm Lake Pilot Tribune 28 Jan 1965.
