Description	:	Mary L. Smith McLaughlin was born in Rock Island, Illinois on June 17, 1857 and died at Rochester, Minnesota on February 2, 1921, aged 63 years, 7 months and 15 days. When 5 years old her parents removed Mercer County, that state, and it was here that she grew to young womanhood, and taught school several terms. Read More	Mary L. Smith McLaughlin was born in Rock Island, Illinois on June 17, 1857 and died at Rochester, Minnesota on February 2, 1921, aged 63 years, 7 months and 15 days. When 5 years old her parents removed Mercer County, that state, and it was here that she grew to young womanhood, and taught school several terms. She was united in marriage to John B McLaughlin on April 11, 1876 and in the following spring they removed to Clinton County, Iowa, where they resided on a farm near DeWitt for two years, or until the spring of 1879, when they came to Sac county locating on a farm three miles southwest of Schaller, where they continued to reside until the spring of 1910, when they retired from the activities of farm life and came to make their home in Schaller. She was the mother of seven children, five sons and "to" daughters, namely W. L of Glidden; J H who died in 1903; H A of LaVerne, Cal; W F of Des Moines; Mrs. Etta McQuigg, Mrs. Nina Woodke and J M of this place. Besides her husband and children she leaves two brothers and three sisters, N P Smith of Clearwater, Kas; L F Smith of Turon, Kas; Mrs. Sarah Bristol, Des Moines; Mrs. Lovina Briggs and Mrs. Huldah Lewis of Hutchinson, Kas. She also leaves ten grandchildren, one, little Robert, died in 1919. Early in life she was converted and joined the Methodist church,and has ever lived a consistant, christian woman, giving of her time and talent for the service of her Lord. She was a loving and dutiful wife and mother, and a kind and hospitable neighbor, always ready with a kind word or deed to help the unfortuanate and held in high esteen by all who made her acquaintance. Her home was a sacred place to her and in it she proved herself to be a true homemaker. Her neighbors were always sure of a welcome when they called at her home, whether it was a convenient hour or otherwise. Her church fellowship was beautiful and her intercourse with those in the various organizations where she held membership, was one that made lasting friendship. She was the first president of the Woman Foreign Missionary Society, and which office she held for eight years, and also held office in the Home Missionary Society a number of years. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist church, the same having been delayed awaiting the arrival of her son from California. Rev. G. J. Poppenheimel conducting same. Music was furnished by Miss Irma Schaefer, Mrs. Leon Stommel, F. W. McQuigg and A. W. Corderman with Miss Tombleson presiding at the pipe organ. The remains were laid to rest in the Schaller cemetery. Relatives and friends from out of town were Mrs. and Mrs. W. L. McLaughlin and family, Glidden; H A McLaughlin, LaVerne, Calif; Mr and Mrs W F McLaughlin, Des Moines; N B Smith, Clearwater, Kas; John Bristol, Des Moines, Miss Jenne Harris, Sioux City; Mr. and Mrs. J W Hartsell and James Hartsell of Early; and Mr and Mrs E D Humphries of Sac City. (This Obituary is from The Schaller Herald) Another article from The Schaller Herald: Mrs. J. B. McLaughlin Passes at Rochester Hospital Word was received this morning to the effect that Mrs. J. B. McLaughlin, who left a week ago for Rochester Hospital, had passed away during the night. Mrs. McLaughlinhad been ailing for several weeks, in fact had not been well for many months, yet kept going, until about two or three weeks ago when she became worse. She was advised to make the trip to Rochester and there submit to an operation, but upon arrival there, last Thursday morning, the hospital physicians decided it was not best to operate until later. Her daughter, Mrs. McQuigg, lef for her home and reached Sioux City and was expected home Monday evening, but before taking the train for Schaller, got message to return at once as her Mother was failing rapidly.
