Mangled Beneath a Slab of Rock Twelve Feet Long, Eight Feet Wide and Three Feet Thick - - Jack Screws Used to Release His Body. While at work Tuesday afternoon in Pierce Stope No. 2, on the six hundred-foot level, John B. Roth was caught beneath a falling slab of rock of immense proportions and his life instantly crushed out. From all accounts, as near as can be ascertained after a most careful investigation by the mine inspector, the unfortunate man met his death in the following manner: He was working alone on the sixth floor of this stope, blockholing, and had about completed his labor for the day, in fact was in the act of loading the holes, when the slab slipped from the hanging wall, struck a slight projection and then fell before Mr. Roth could get out of the way, catching him beneath its immense weight and crushing him before he could utter a sound. It was sometime before the accident was discovered, and then it was not known who the unfortunate man was beneath the rock, as it completely covered him. Jack screws were brought to the scene and employed to lift the rock and then only was he identified. In falling the rock must have struck him on the chest, for that part of his body and to his waist, was crushed to a pulp, and so awfully was he mangled that his corpse scarcely resembled that of a human. His body was immediately taken to the surface and given into the charge of an undertaker to prepare for burial. At an inquest held by the coroner, it developed that the ground in which Mr. Roth had been working was considered safe, and had given no evidence of moving; that the accident had occurred at 3 o'clock, and that it was not until 3:45 that the body was released from beneath the rock. The jury also found that the death of Mr. Roth was caused by an unavoidable accident. During the short stay of Mr. Roth in Lead, he made many warm friends, and from these and from the citizens of Lead generally there is extended to the sorrowing wife and children who have ben bereft of a supporter, their most heartfelt sympathy. John B. Roth was aged 49 years, 5 months and 2 days. Deceased leaves a wife and six children ranging in age from 6 to 19 years old, the oldest being Mrs. Mable Taylor of Belle Fourche, and a brother, Chris Roth, who resides on a farm near Stanton, Neb. Deceased was born in Germany and at the age of 17 years he came to America. He was married at Florence, Neb., and afterward moved to Lake City, Colo., where he resided until he came to Lead in September 1904. He has been in the employ of the Homestake Mining company since as a miner. He was a member of Lake City Lodge, No. 53 A.O.U.W., and the Lead City Miners' Union. The latter will have charge of the funeral. Deceased was raised in the Lutheran church. Funeral will be held from the late home of the deceased, 449 Barclay avenue, at 2 p.m. tomorrow. Rev. Montgomery will officiate. One of the saddest features of the accident is that there was to have been a family reunion at the home on Barclay avenue yesterday, and to attend this reunion there came from Belle Fourche, Mrs. Mable Taylor, his oldest daughter, and her young brother, and all of the family had been looking ahead until the time came with the most pleasant of anticipations. It was a fearful blow to them, and instead of being a day of joy and happiness, Christmas was to them a day of sorrow and mourning.
