Description	:	John B. Wells, 86 years of age, who witnessed the sacking of Lawrence by Quantrill and his guerrillas, died at his home near the Bell school at 12:45 o'clock this morning. Mr. Wells had made his home there for 75 years. Mr. Wells was born in Platte County, Mo., July 24, 1845, and came with his parents to Leavenworth County when ten years of age. Mr. Wells had made his home there for 75 years. Mr. Wells was born in Platte County, Mo., July 24, 1845, and came with his parents to Leavenworth County when ten years of age. When a mere boy he entered the government service at Fort Leavenworth as a "mule skinner" and made many trips to Santa Fe, N.M., Fort Lyons, Colo., and other western military posts. He remained in government service until after the close of the Civil War when he took up farming on the old home place in High Prairie Township. Mr. Wells often recalled the burning of Lawrence by Quantrill and his band. His wagon train was returning to Fort Leavenworth from a tip to the west and had made camp at Lawrence. Hearing that Quantrill was on his way to destroy Lawrence, the wagon boss ordered the 25 wagons ferried across the river. They made camp in what is now North Lawrence and from there saw the city destroyed. Mr. Wells' act of kindness to a hungry squaw once saved his train from an Indian attack. The squaw had begged for food for herself and papoose and Wells supplied her. On the next trip the squaw came to Wells and told him his train was to be attacked. A hurried departure saved the train. Mr. Wells is survived by his sons, John Wells, Montana, and Sam E. and Perry E. Wells, home address; daughters, Mrs. Myrtle May Stone, California; step-daughter Mrs. Iva Mae Kroll, rural route 4, Leavenworth, and Mrs. Anna Keith, Iola, Kas. He was a lifelong member of the Methodist church and of Nine Mile lodge, A.F. and A.M. The body is at the Bush and Son funeral parlor where it will lie in state until Thursday noon. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday at Bethel Church and burial will be in Bethel Cemetery. Leavenworth, KS Times-January 27, 1931 Contributed by Thomas Hotchkiss
