He was then forced to give up work and although not bedfast, he was confined to his home most of the time. Only a few days previous to his death did he suffer to any great extent. John Baptist Ambs was born June 21, 1844 at Baden, Germany. May 6, 1873 he was united in marriage with Mary Happe in Chicago. For eight years after their marriage they lived in Chicago, later moving to Albert Lea, Minn. They lived for a number of years at Boone, moving from there to Carroll twenty-two years ago. To them were born ten children, four boys and six girls, one boy dying in infancy. Those living are: John of Greensboro, Penn; Fred, Boone; Frank, Los Angeles, Cal.; Rose, Mrs. G.E. Bentley, Boone; Mayme, Mrs. Herman Scherping, Boone; and Minnie, Julia, Frances, and Josephine who are still at home During the past year the deceased has been in poor health and unable to perform manual labor. He never gave up but made a brave fight under the most adverse circumstances. He has been able to care for himself and family and though beset with ills from which the ordinary person would have shrunk, he has faced the responsibilies of life. Under those trying afflictions he has been of good cheer and showed a devotion to his family and home that has commanded the respect of the community in which he lived. After the trials he has passed through and the fortitude displayed, it is to be hoped that he has gone to a better world where he will enjoy the blessings of a life well spent and the rewards of a glorious immortality. The bereaved family have the sympathy of all in their deep affliction. The funeral will be held tomorow at 2 p.m. under the auspices of the Masonic lodge of this city of which he was a member.
