On June 6, 1872, John married Miss Mary O'Donnell. They were the parents of Thomas, William, John, Loretta, Nora, Mary, Ella, and Katherine. Oct 30, 1913 - Carroll Times - John Bowler, for more than thirty years a resident of this city, died at 6:30 p.m. Sunday after an illness extending over several years, the cause of death being a nervous disease, from which he had suffered severely. Mr. Bowler was born at Inch, County Kerry, Ireland August 2, 1852. His family home was only a few miles from the famous Lake of Killarney. While yet a young man he came to the United States, settling first at Delaware, Ohio. On June 6, 1872, he was married to Miss Mary O'Donnell, who came from the same part of Ireland. Shortly after marriage they moved from Delaware to Columbus, Ohio, where two children were born to them, one of whom died in infancy. In 1874 they moved to Arcadia, Iowa, and two years later to Carroll. One daughter was born in Arcadia and six sons and four daughters have been born to them since their residence in Carroll. Of their children, two sons and five daughters survive to mourn the loss of their father and to give comfort and support to the sorrowing mother. They are: T.J. and J.P. Bowler both of Carroll; Mrs. J.F. Kane of Omaha; Mrs. James Dunphy of Jefferson; Miss Ella Bowler of Omaha; Mrs. George Bartels of Benton, Iowa; and Miss Loretta Bowler at home in Carroll. Mr Bowler spent most of his life as a railroad employee and for many years held a responsible possition with the Chicago & Northwestern Railway Company, being in charge of the coal supply of that company at Missouri Valley, Carroll and Boone. He was a devout Catholic and was a charter member of the Roman Catholic Mutual Protective Society. He died with all the rites of the church. The deceased was the oldest of a family of six brothers and three sisters. His brothers, all younger than he, passed away before him. The sisters are all living, they are: Mrs. Jas. Griffin, of Carroll; Mrs. Nora Lamb, of Australia; and Mrs. Maloney, of Charlotte, Iowa. The sister from Australia visited in this city about two years ago, at which time the brothers and sisters met for the first time in more tnan thirty years. The funeral took place in St. Joseph's church of which he was a member and burial made in the cemetery of that parish. The following from out of town were in attendance at the funeral: Mr. and Mrs. John Shaw, and Mr. Martin Duffy, of Jetterson; Mr. John Bowler and Mr. Morris Griffin, of Omaha, both of these being nephews of the deceased; Mr. and Mrs. John Maloney, of Charlotte, Iowa and Miss Bertha Briggs, of Omaha.
