After suffering with hardening of the arteries and other complications for sometime past, John Bunyon Nelson, one of Crisfield's most prominent and most highly esteemed citizens, died at his home on central Main Street at 4.25 o'clock Sunday afternoon. The end came peacefully, with the members of his family at his bedside. Mr. Nelson was a son of the late Azariah and Mary Nelson, and was born in the Mariners section of this community, on April 22, 1854. He would have reached his 73d milestone on the 22nd of next April. His father, a waterman by vocation, was drowned in Tangier Sound when the son was 17 years of age. The lad went to work a short while later. In early manhood Mr. Nelson engaged in the oyster business on the Rappahannock River, with his brothers. Later he returned to Crisfield and established the Marine Railway business in the "Jersey" section of Crisfield, with his uncle, the late G. S. McCready. The firm of Nelson & McCready conducted the ship building and Marine Railway business very successfully for many years, their Crisfield plant being one of the best known railways on Chesapeake Bay. When Mr. McCready retired from business his interests were purchased by Mr. Nelson, who continued in that line of business until he sold the plant and property to the Crisfield Ship Building Company, during the late war. For many years Mr. Nelson had been prominent in Crisfield business circles. In addition to his Marine Railway interests, he was one of the organizers and a Director in the Marine Bank, and was a large owner of Crisfield property. In politics he was an ardent Democrat, and had been active in party affairs for considerable time. Mr. Nelson was also one of the oldest members of Mt. Pleasant M. P. church, and served as a member of the Official Board for many years. Mr. Nelson was a gentleman of many fine qualities, and was highly respected and esteemed by the entire community. "Capt. Bun," as he was familiarly known, had been identified with the progress and growth of Crisfield for more than fifty years, and during that time he had contributed considerably to the development of the town. A man of high character and integrity above reproach, a loyal friend and kindly neighbor, he will be sadly missed in the community. On July 1, 1975, Mr. Nelson was married to Miss Mary L Sterling, daughter of the late John N. Sterling of this city. He is survived by his widow, and one son, John L. Nelson; two grandchildren, Arthur H. Nelson and Sarah E. Nelson; one sister, Mrs. Effie A. Wallace; and four brothers Jas. Wesley Nelson of Oakland, California; Winfield Scott Nelson of Crisfield; William B. and Thomas Nelson of Matthews County, Va. Funeral services over the remains were held from Mt. Pleasant M. P. church on Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Louis Randall, a former pastor and a warm personal friend of the deceased. Interment was in Crisfield cemetery. Eastern Shore Council, Jr. 0. U. A. M. and Crisfield Nest of Owls, of which the deceased was a member, were represented at the funeral.
