Craig, who lived alone at 1411 Washington, was found dead in his home about 11 o'clock Sunday morning. Chief of Police Roy Clay and Dr. C. E. Chief of Police Roy Clay and Dr. C. E. Partridge, coroner, who investigated, concluded Mr. Craig had been dead since Thursday night. The coroner said his death was caused by asphyxiation from carbon monoxide produced by an open gas stove. Mr. Craig lived in a garage-house which he had built on his own property. One room was his living quarters and the other room housed his Ford truck. Not having seen Mr. Craig since Thursday morning and fearing something had happened to him, Fred Fleek who lives next door, went to the Craig house Sunday morning and looked through the window. He saw Mr. Craig lying dead on the bed. Fleeker notified the police. Chief Roy Clay answered the call and then called the coroner. Upon entering the house they found the gas stove still burning. Mr. Craig's body was on the bed. The coroner reported that apparently Mr. Craig had started to get ready for bed. His shoes were removed, but he had on one slipper. It is believed he was overcome and fell back on the bed. No lights were on and It is believed death came early in the evening. He had not taken in his Thursday evening newspaper which was still in the front of the door along with succeeding issues of the paper. Mr. Craig had lived at 1411 Washington about eight months. He formerly conducted an awning business, selling out several years ago to Ralph Hahn, of the Emporia Tent and Awning company. Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Sutton Funeral home. Interment will be in the Americus cemetery. BORN IN 1857 John C. Craig was born May 1, 1857 in Washington county, Ill., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Craig. He came to Kansas with his family when he was about 5 years old, settling in Americus. There he learned the harness trade. At the age of 20 he came to Emporia. He was engaged in the harness business here and in Madison for nearly 20 years before he went into the tent and awning business. He lived in Emporia 55 years. He was active in band and orchestra circles here and about 35 years ago he was assistant fire chief in Emporia. Mr. Craig was married in September, 1893, in Emporia, to Anna Beach. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Irene McCosh, of Missouri; three sisters Mrs Janet Hassinger of Topeka, Mrs Jane Thompson of Bartlesville, Okla., and Miss Bell Craig of Staten Island, NY.
