Dukes was born in Jackson county, Ind., on April 22, 1839 and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. L. Carpenter, in Charles City, Iowa, on Saturday May 13, 1922, at the age of 83 years and 21 days. When about 15 years of age he came with his mother to Iowa and settled in Lucas county, where he resided until about a year ago, since which time he has made his home with his daughter at Charles City. On Dec. 9, 1875 he was united in marriage to Martha Elizabeth Shular, daughter of Rev. David Shular, who preached the gospel in the United Brethren church over 50 years, having been licensed in the Indiana conference in 1853 and died at the age of 75 years. Brother John Dukes became a christian when a young man and walked with God for 58 years. He was a faithful member of the Christian church and 35 years ago bacame a member of the United Brethren church at Bethel, and later transferred to Chariton U. B. church, in which he continued until his death. To Mr. and Mrs. Dukes were born six children, three of whom died in early childhood, and a daughter, Mrs. Nellie Campbell, preceded him about eight years ago. He leaves to mourn his departure his loving wife and companion of 47 years, Mrs. Martha Elizabeth Dukes, and two children, Mr. Roy Dukes of Chariton, and Mrs. J. L. Carpenter of Charles City, besides many other kindred and numerous friends. He suffered many years and was quite helpless, but through it all was patient and spiritually minded. He died triumphantly in the hope of immortal life. "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning." Ps. 30:5 The funeral services were conducted on Monday at the Chariton U. B. church by Rev. E. W. Curtis, with brief services at Bethel, Rev. Kampman assisting. Interment was in the Bethel cemetery.
