Dukes was born in Marion county, Iowa, Sept. 12, 1858, and passed away in Chariton, Iowa, on April 6, 1938, in her eightieth year. She was the daughter of David and Sarah Shuler, her father being a pioneer minister in the United Brethren church. She was married to John C. Dukes on Dec. 9, 1875. Daughter of David Samuel Shular and Sarah Kendrick. OBITUARY THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Tuesday, April 12, 1938 MARTHA E. DUKES Martha E. Dukes was born in Marion county, Iowa, Sept. 12, 1858, and passed away in Chariton, Iowa, on April 6, 1938, in her eightieth year. She was the daughter of David and Sarah Shuler, her father being a pioneer minister in the United Brethren church. She was married to John C. Dukes on Dec. 9, 1875. To this union six children were born, of whom three died in childhood. A daughter, Mrs. Nellie Campbell, passed away in 1914. The survivors are a son, Roy Dukes of Chariton, and a daughter, Mrs. May Carpenter, of Kansas City, Mo.; thirteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Her companion passed away in 1922 at Charles City, Ia. The deceased was a christian all her life and was a member of the Russell M. E. church when she died. She came from the U. B. church to the Russell M. E. church. She has always lived in Iowa and most of the time in or near Russell. Funeral services were held at the Beardsley funeral home on April 8, with the Rev. A. J. Matthews officiating and interment was in the Bethel cemetery.
