Description	:	John C. Carney of Burlington died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006, at National Health Care in Mauldin, S.C. He was 82. Mr. Carney was a mail carrier and then postmaster in Burlington until he retired in 1985. He entered the U.S. Army on April 13, 1943, and served as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne during World War II. He was in campaigns in the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe Theater. Carney of Burlington died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006, at National Health Care in Mauldin, S.C. He was 82. Mr. Carney was a mail carrier and then postmaster in Burlington until he retired in 1985. He entered the U.S. Army on April 13, 1943, and served as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne during World War II. He was in campaigns in the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe Theater. At the end of the war, he was awarded a Bronze Arrow Head and Presidential Unit Citation. After the war, he continued in his military career with the Kansas National Guard until he retired as a captain after 29 years of service. He returned to Burlington where he was a meat cutter at Meek's IGA before he became a mail carrier. In July, he and his wife moved to Simpsonville, S.C., to be near their daughter. The son of William and Blanche Johnson Carney, he was born Aug. 9, 1924, in rural Burlington. He grew up in the Burlington area and graduated from Burlington High School in 1942. He married Bette I. Cellars on Feb. 15, 1946, at Burlington. She survives. Mr. Carney was a member of the First Christian Church in Burlington. He also was a member of American Legion Congdon-Kepler Post 38, American Legion, Burlington Rotary Club, Burlington Masonic Lodge 66 and Rock Creek Country Club. He is also survived by two daughters, Cynthia Carney Powell of Simpsonville, S.C., and Geraldine Boyer of Noblesville, Ind.; one sister, Nellie Truelove of Burlington; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Two brothers, Bill Carney and Ben Carney; and six sisters, Alta Barton, Geraldine Russell, Georgia Whitner, Della Harper, Nina Carney and Alma Cole, died earlier. Burial, with military services conducted by a U.S. Army Honor Guard from Fort Riley, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Graceland Cemetery at Burlington. Mr. Carney was cremated.
