He, his wife Anna and their five children, Johann who married Anne Kasina, Joseph who married Sofie Bruna, Franz who married Anna Pulkrabek, Louis who married Sofie Drinovsky, Marie who married Joseph Ledvina, and Josephs who married Vince Bruna landed in Baltimore, Maryland on June 13. Children born in the United States were Josephine who married James Uridil and Anna who married Joseph Kopriva. One year later the family moved to Tama County. John purchased his first land in Carroll Township. He paid $400.00 for 80 acres in 1870. John and his brother Anton continued to buy and sell land in Carroll Township in the ensuing years. Most of their sons remained in this area for the next thirty years. John died in 1895 and both he and his wife are buried in Holy Trinity Cemetery. Some of John's son Joseph's children moved to the Imperial Valley in California in the early 1900's. Soon Joseph and the balance of his family followed. They were some of the first farmers in this area. Farming continued to be the primary livelihood for these early Tama county settlers until the 1950's. Modernization then began to send the young people off to the cities. In the early 1900's, Louis, Joseph, Albert, and Amiel (all sons of Louis Chalupnik) ceased using the "C" in front of their name. Some inserted the "C" ahead of the ... k" while others dropped it completely. The legendary reason for this action was that there were a number of Chalupniks with the same given name and their mail was continuously being sent to the wrong individual. James Chalupnik wrote the book, Pioneers 0 Pioneers, which provides an excellent history of the early years in Tama County for the Chalupniks. The Czech meaning for Chalupnik is "a peasant owning a small abandoned cottage". In 1977 Dale Halupnik visited the village of Prosec. He met Anton Chalupnik, the grandson of Frantisek, John's and Anton's brother. Anton had intended to immigrate to the United States in the 1920's but an accident caused the loss of his right hand and he would have been unable to pass the physical. Many Chalupniks continue to live in Prosec. It appears that phonetic spelling of the name was common. The 1880 census had spellings of: Colupnick and Chalupnick. Land records had spellings of. After paying their sailing fare, they came by train to Iowa in 1867 and bought land in Oneida Township, south Tama County. Their sons and grandsons were farmers in Tama County until a grandson, John, graduated from Iowa State College, Ames, Iowa and moved to Imperial Valley, California. Some of his brothers and sisters followed him out there. After his mother died in 1908, the rest of the family moved to California. They did much of the original irrigation in their part of the Imperial Valley. James Chalupnik wrote a book "Pioneers O Pioneers!" describes their life in California. Frank Seda was born in Ujezd u Chocne, Czech Republic, in 1867, son of Frantiska Moravkova Prchat and Frankisek Seda. Frank had an uncle who was the director of the Austro-Hungarian Army Band. He taught Frank to play six musical instruments. In 1885 when Frank was eighteen years old, he came to the United States to avoid military service in the Austro-Hungarian Army. He came to Tama County, Iowa, because of the large Czech community. He had been a gravedigger in the Czech Republic. He was also a carpenter, a mason, a farmer, and a musician. He bought twenty acres in the east half of Section Three in Carroll Township. In 1886 he assisted the rest of his family's move to the United States. His family consisted of his father, his mother, his sisters Anna Slatina, Emma Drahos, Fannie Nieman, and half-sister Frantiska Hendrych, and his brother Joe J. Seda. Another half-sister, who had married James Brasten, remained in the Czech Republic, but later moved to Oklahoma. On March 27,1894, Frank married Mary Chalupnik of Carroll Township at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. They moved to a farm south of Traer. To this union six children were born. Josef, the oldest, and George, the youngest, died in infancy. The other children were Ludwig, Edward, Albina Kupka, and Anna Biley.
