Mr. Chapman was in his usual health until last Wednesday when he was taken suddenly ill with urinal trouble. A doctor was called and later in the week he was taken t the hospital at Webster City for treatment. He was over 75 years old and had lived continuously on the old home farm for fifty-three years. Funeral services were held from the home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock and interment took place in the South Marion cemetery. Stratford Courier September 22, 1921 OBITUARY Chapman John Chapman was born in Ireland, March 15, 1841, and passed away at his home southeast of Stratford, Iowa, Sept. 11, 1921, aged 80 years, 5 months and 26 days. At the age of six years he emigrated to America with is parents and located at Dubuque, Iowa, where he resided until 1870, when he came to Hamilton county, Iowa, where he was united in marriage to Jennie Ristrim Feb. 10, 1873. To this union were born four children, three of whom survive, namely: Mrs. A.G. Lund of Laurens, Iowa; Edward of Marathon, Iowa, and Mrs. E.G. Smith of Marathon, Iowa. A son, William, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, one son, five grand children, two sisters, Mrs. Nessie Desmond and Mrs. Kate Ryan of Dubuque Co., Iowa; three brothers, Bernard, William and David Chapman, all of Dubuque county, Iowa, besides a host of other relatives and friends. One brother, Edward Chapman, passed away twelve years ago. Deceased had been a member of the M.E. church for many years. He was a kind and loving husband and father and a good friend and neighbor, ever ready to lend a helping hand wherever needed. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Frank W. Wilson, pastor of the M.E. church of Stratford, from the late home Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 13th, 1921, at 2 o'clock. The singing was furnished by a mixed quartette from Stratford, cmoposed of the Misses Mae Swedlund and Frances Pharo and Messrs. O.L. Swedlund and F.W. Wilson. The pall bearers were Alfred Erickson, Albert Poulson, Oliver Sealine, F.A. Carlson and Nels and Andrew Peterson. Interment was made in the South Marion cemetery. Relatives in attendance of the funeral were Dave Chapman, Mrs. Esther Desmond, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Champan and Mrs. Mary Chapman and son, Earl, all of Peosta; Mr. and Mrs. Jay McCarthy and Mr. and Mrs. Faben Beckett of Dubuque; Mr. and Mrs. A.G. Lund of Laurens; Mr. and Mrs. E.G. Smith and family of Marathon. The out-of-town friends in attendance were O.A. Smith and daughter, Mrs. Allen Cox of Leverett, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Peterson and Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Gustafson of Boone and Mrs. Gust Simonson of Des Moines. Card of Thanks We wish to herewith extend our sincere thanks to the many kind friends and neighbors for the assistance given us during the illness and the death of our beloved husband and father, John Chapman.
