Carritt of Bentley Dies In 81st Year A large crowd was present in the Bentley Hall on Friday afternoon for the funeral of John C. Carritt, a pioneer settler of the district who passed away at the home of his daughter in Winnipeg on Monday last, after a short illness. Rev. H. Ricker officiated, and pallbearers were Floyd, Ronald, Vernon, Howard, Robert and Royal Nelson, grandsons of deceased, Garth Nelson, Danny Carritt, Dick Reit…, Charles Woolgar and Norman Wheeler carried flowers. The choir sang several hymns, and Mrs. Douglas Wyatt and Murray Bigam sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere. Interment took place in the Bentley cemetery. Many beautiful floral tributes were received. John C. Carritt was born on May14, 1864, at the farm home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.A. Carritt, pioneer settlers of Castana, Iowa. On April 8, 1888, he was married to Mary Jane Peabody of Whiting, Iowa. When a young man, he was appointed postmaster at Castana, which post he held for five years in connection with a grocery store. During this time he took up the study of telegraphy and in 1893 accepted the position of station agent at Lindsay, Neb., where he remained for eight years. In 1889 he made a trip to Alberta and while on the train met the late George Garries, who filed on the land at that time and came to Alberta in 1900. Mr. Carritt kept in correspondence with Mr. Garries and during the following year decided to locate here. In February, 1901, he homesteaded in the Rainy Creek district, 5½ miles southwest of Bentley. In company with the late Thomas Bigam and the late N.S. Nelson, he comprised the first school board of the Carritt school, acting as secretary-treasurer for a number of years. He also acted as secretary-treasurer of the Local Improvement District for some years. He was instrumental in having the rural mail route serving the Rainy Creek, Sunset and Stephenson districts established and was the first courier, serving for 15 years, during which time he missed but one trip. In 1928 he retired from the farm and purchased a small acreage in Bentley. He was also keenly interested in gardening and fruit raising, and the small orchard which he set out soon after coming to Bentley attracted many visitors, and this year bore several bushels of plums, apples, crabapples, etc. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Charles of Sylvan Lake and Fred of Red Deer; and four daughters, Mrs. Fred C. Nelson of Rainy Creek, Mrs. W.R. Woolgar of Bentley, Mrs. H. Sandrock of Winnipeg, and Mrs. R.M. McNeill of Bentley. There are eighteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Three grandsons and one grandson-in-law are in the services, and another grandson, F/Sgt. Raymond Peterson, was reported killed in action. A sister, Mrs. Minnie Davis, of Turin, Iowa, also survives. Mrs. Muriel Sandrock, who accompanied her mother home from Winnipeg, and attended the funeral of her father, left for her home on Monday. Cpl. C.R. Woolgar, who also attended the funeral, has returned to Calgary. Miss Helen Carritt and Mrs. E. Long, of Brooks, attended the funeral of their grandfather, Mr. Carritt.
