Carritt It is with much regret that we report the death of one of the old-timers of this district, in the person of Mr. Judson Eugene Carritt, on Saturday, January 19, at the Bentley Community Hospital. While he had been in very poor health for the past month, his condition was not thought serious until two or three days before the end came. He had frequently experience severe suffering from stomach trouble, ever since he was a young man, which gradually grew worse as he advanced in years, in spite of all that medical skill could do. He was born in Elkhorn, Walworth County, Wisconsin, n August 31, 1858, and went to Montana County, Ia., with his parents by way of a covered wagon and ox team in 1860, and resided there till 1904 when he came to Alberta and took up a homestead where Fred Nelson now resides. With the exception of the first two years in Alberta, when he lived with his brother, Mr. J.C. Carritt, he kept bachelor's hall till 1919, when he went to live with Mr. and Mrs. Begert, who have done everything possible to make life comfortable for him while he was with them, especially Mrs. Begert, who cared for him through many sick spells. He was of a very quiet disposition but was always first to help along a worthy cause as his generous gifts to the Bentley Hospital, Carritt school library, and many friends and neighbors in time of loss of sickness prove. He served for several years on the Board of the Carritt school. He was never happier than when trapping or hunting, of which he had done a great deal, and was always a welcome visitor at every home in the neighborhood when his trap-line and his way led past their homes. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Daniels and Mrs. A.H. Davis, and one brother Mr. J.M. Carritt in Iowa, and one brother Mr. J.C. Carritt at Bentley, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral service was held in the Bentley church on Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Mr. Howarth, and in spite of the intense cold, a large crown attended to pay the last respects to their departed friend and neighbor. Three large floral wreaths from friends and relatives adorned the casket. The pallbearers were Messrs. W.J. Begert, H.C. Peterson, J.H. Steele, Fred Nelson, Charles Carritt and Fred Carritt. The remains were laid to rest in the Bentley cemetery with a short service at the graveside. The Red Deer Advocate Thursday, January 24, 1929, age 6 Alberta Death Reg. #401-044
