R. CARRITT LAID TO REST. ---------------------------------------- Castana Times: The death of Thomas R. Carritt was chronicled in last week’s Times. He died February 27 and was laid to rest Wednesday, March 5. The funeral services were held at the Congregational church in charge of Rev C. M. Perrin. He was born Feb. 19, 1830, and passed to his rest Feb. 27, 1919. This is the simple statement that covers a man’s life, his birth and his death, whether the years be few or many. Yet when the dates span 89 years, sixty years of which were lived in Monona county, it covers a large measure of time that includes much of the world’s greatest history. Mr. Carritt can rightfully be classed with the “old pioneers” and find an honored place with the sturdy heroes who founded new communities and assisted in building new states. When Castana was not and Onawa was but a halting station for a stage coach that connected the frontier with civilization, these sturdy men and women, of small means but with great faith, built on the wastes of nature and set about developing the wonderful resources of the county and state we now enjoy and sincerely love. In his younger years Mr. Carritt was a sturdy man who had, and held, his part in the affairs of life even to within a short time of his death. A native of England he was intensely loyal to America and during the war with Germany he kept in daily step, through the newspapers with tho boys in battle and all the governmental affairs at home. In earlier days he had a large acquaintance with the people of the county and “Uncle Tommy” Carritt was known far and near, first as an old settler and then as a man of strong character, upright, square and faithful in his dealings with his fellow men. His old age was hallowed by the attentive care and interest of the worthy family he had reared. Thus another landmark of early Monona county has been removed, and the beaten path that led to his door has grown into the wide highway of a world’s progress and a new age. But to the children who remain and the old friends who knew, the old days and the old ways will still have their fragrant memories that cannot be forgotten until memory shall have ceased forever. Mr. Carritt was married to Mary Perrin in October, 1856, who passed away a few years ago.
