Description	:	John C. Babb, 76, of 134 N. Sheridan, died at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born to William and Mildred Denning Babb. He attended Catholic Central High School and then went to work at John Morrell until its closing. He then worked at John Deere until retirement. He attended St. Patrick's Church in Ottumwa. He married Veronica Schmitz, June 19, 1948 at St. Mary's Church in Ottumwa. John was a well known local race car driver, winning over 200 feature events throughout the Midwest, in a career spanning 28 years. He was born to William and Mildred Denning Babb. He attended Catholic Central High School and then went to work at John Morrell until its closing. He then worked at John Deere until retirement. He attended St. Patrick's Church in Ottumwa. He married Veronica Schmitz, June 19, 1948 at St. Mary's Church in Ottumwa. John was a well known local race car driver, winning over 200 feature events throughout the Midwest, in a career spanning 28 years. Among his many accomplishments, John was Iowa State Super Modified Champion in 1961 and 1962, set fast time at the Knoxville, Iowa Nationals in 1964 and was second fastest in 1965. John was inducted into the Knoxville, Iowa Drivers' Hall of Fame in 1981. Until recently John had continued his involvement in racing by building race car carburetors for drivers throughout the central United States. Surviving is his wife; three sons and their wives, Steve and Leta of Ottumwa, Alan and Patty of Ottumwa, Bill and Jill of Flagstaff, Arizona; two daughters and their Husbands, Rebecca and David Jones of Ottumwa and Barbara and Ronald Jones of Ottumwa; ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters and their husbands, Maxine and Kenney Cassatt of Ottumwa and Darlene and Max Patrick of Rialto, California. He was Preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Myrtle Bates; and a daughter-in-law, Cheri Everingham Babb. At his request, Father John Spiegel performed a graveside service for the family.
