Read More	The Hooper Sentinel August 26, 1920 Death of a Pioneer Last Friday afternoon, August 20, saw the passing of one of the real pioneers of this vicinity in the death of John Raasch at the family home in this city. Infirmities due to old age was the cause of his death. In spite of these and his age, 85 years, 7 months and 11 days, he was able to be up and about the house until about a month ago when he was taken to his bed. Mr. Raasch was born in Germany on December 31, 1834. He came to America in 1842, locating in Wisconsin in which state he was married to Miss Barbara Uehling in 1857. In 1865 the family emigrated to Dodge county, Nebraska, homesteading on the farm northeast of Hooper now occupied by B. H. Monnich. As a pioneer settler Mr. Raasch saw and went through all the struggles and hardships of those early days, but with a tenaciousness of purpose stuck thru it all and had seen this community grow into the garden spot of the country. His life was an open book and held the highest respect and confidence of all the people of this community. In 1904 he and Mrs. Raasch moved to town to spend their declining years in the quiet and comfort they so deservedly earned. Celebrating their golden wedding anniversary in the year 1907. He was the father of eleven children, six of whom, with the widow, survive. The children are Casper, of Inman; Henry, Ashland; Gottlieb, Denver, Colo.; Emil, Omaha; Mrs. Henry Paulsen, Bancroft, and Mrs. Wm. Hoefner, West Point. With the exception of Gottlieb, all of the children were here when the end came. He is also survived by forty-nine grandchildren and forty-three great-grandchildren. Short funeral services were held at the home at 1:30 Sunday afternoon and at two o'clock at the Methodist church, Rev. H. C. Julius Frese, pastor of the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church, northwest of town, and of which Mr. Raasch was one of the founders, preaching the sermon. Interment was made in the St. John church cemetery. The pall bearers were six grandsons of the deceased. The funeral was largely attended by relatives and friends, those from a distance being; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hartung, Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Hartung and Albert Hoefner, Wisner; Emil Hoefner, Pierce, Martin Hoefner, West Point; Mrs. John Raasch and two daughters, Mr. and Mrs. John Raasch, jr., Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Toelle, Mr. and Mrs. Nellor, Mr. and Mrs. Monke, Mr and Mrs. Schultze, Mrs. George Munderloh and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Paulsen of Beemer; Mrs. Fred Raasch, Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Marquardt and Mrs. J. J. Fletcher of Fremont, and Henry Paulsen and family of Bancroft. ----- Addtional Note; John Raasch emigrated from Stettin, Germany on the bark "Ajax", arriving in New York on Sept. 11, 1843.
