Mr. Rogers -------- John C. McKinney The News of the death of John C. McKinney, formerly of this city, at the home of his son, John, in Chicago on Saturday, November 7 was received with genuine regret by his many old friends and relatives in this city. While many were aware of his gradual failing in health they did not realize his condition was serious. He has been in poor health for the past few years and gradually grew weaker until about a month ago he was compelled to take to his bed. The remains, accompanied by relatives arrived in Spirit Lake on Monday and was taken to the home of his Daughter, Mrs. Chas. C. Noll. The funeral services were conducted in the Methodist Church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Rev. Turbeville. Interment occurred in the Lake View cemetery. John C. McKinney was born in the town of Veteran, New York, on August 22nd, 1849, and was united in marriage to Elizabeth Ely on January 1, 1869. To this union were born nine children of whom six [seven] are living, namely: Mrs. Flora Wallace of Sioux City, Iowa, Mrs. Harriett C. Noll of Spirit Lake, Mrs. Mattie Protheroe of Hartville, Mo., Mrs. Mable Sherburne of Waterloo and Mrs. Abby Anderson of Chicago, and son John of that place. Mrs. Emma Inman and Mrs. Marion Rogers passed away some years since. Besides his wife and children he is survived by three sisters and one brother, his parents passing away some years ago. Mr. McKinney was very well known in this community having been engaged in the market gardening business here for about eighteen years. He came to Dickinson county from Traer, Iowa. For the past year Mr. and Mrs. McKinney have been making their home with their son John in Chicago. He was a member of the G. A. R. serving in the army until the close of the Civil War. Mrs. J. C. McKinney and family and Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Noll and family wish to thank the many friends and neighbors for their sympathy and beautiful floral offerings in this their hour of sadness. Obituary is published in The Spirit Lake Beacon, Nov. 12, 1914. --------
