Jones, president of the Jones Clothing Company, died this morning at 1 o'clock at his home, 621 Neosho Street, of heart failure. He had been sick since July, but had been down town several times within the past two weeks. For the past ten days he had been confined to his bed. At times he rallied, but he was stricken at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, and sank rapidly until his death early this morning. Mr. Jones was born in South Wales, September 19, 1845. In 1850 his parents moved to the United States and soon after located at Remsen, N. Y. He was married November 24, 1867, in Turin, N. Y., to Miss Lucina Allen and they came to Kansas in the fall of 1871. Their oldest son, Charles R. Jones, was born in New York. Mr. Jones worked for the Bancroft & McCarty Dry Goods Company for a time, and later entered the clothing business with his brother, G. P. Jones, under the firm name G. P. Jones & Company, in one of the rooms now occupied by the G. W. Newman Dry Goods Company. G. P. Jones withdrew from the business in 1884 and the firm became Jones & Edwards, and later Jones & Lakin. The business was carried on in the building at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Commercial Street, which now is occupied by the Palace Clothing Company, and later they moved to the Bruner building, where they remained for eleven years. The firm was again changed, this time to the Jones Clothing Company, with J. C. Jones as senior partner and president of the corporation, and was moved to the present location at 516 Commercial Street. Mr. Jones was a shrewd business man, fair in all his dealings, and was highly respected by everyone in Emporia. He served as junior warden, senior warden, and master of the Masons, and joined the Commandery in 1879. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America and the Ancient Order of United Workmen, and held offices in both organizations, and was active in their work. He had been identified with the Masons since he first came to Kansas. He was an active member of the First Methodist Church, and served for several years as a trustee of the church. He is survived by his wife; a brother, G. P. Jones, of near Olpe; three sons, Charles R. Jones, of Carlsbad, N. Mex.; Ernest Jones, of Topeka, and George Jones, of Emporia; and a daughter, Miss Elsie Jones, of Emporia. The funeral will be held Friday, but complete arrangements will be made when Charles R. Jones arrives from New Mexico.
