Son of John Crawford and Christena Wells OBITUARY THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, April 14, 1927 JOHN CRAWFORD Many friends will learn with sorrow of the passing away of John Crawford which occurred at his home in Norwood, Iowa. He was born in Dayton, Ohio, August 10, 1842, and departed this life April 3, 1927, at the age of 84 years, 7 months and 23 days. On October 21, 1860, he was united in marriage to Samantha Baxter in Ottercreek township, which has been his home since the age of 9 years. To this union ten children were born, seven of whom survive him. Three preceded him in death, Benjamin departed this life January 29, 1874, William on October 6, 1874 and Christena, who died February 8, 1889. Those surviving him are his wife, Samantha, of Norwood: his children, Leander Crawford, of Buffalo, Ok.; Mrs. Mary Hickman, Chariton; Mrs. Hattie Nine, of Norwood; Mrs. Bertha Snuggs, of Chariton; Mrs. Mantie Nine, of Lacona; Garfield Crawford, of Norwood; and Mrs. Lula Grater, of Prineville, Oregon. All of the family were present except Lulu, of Oregon. There are also twenty-five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends, who mourn his demise. At the early age of 18 years he was converted at a revival meeting held in the Curtis schoolhouse, and joined the Methodist church, later taking his card to the United Brethren church, where he has been a constant member throughout the years. In 1854, at the age of 12 years, he came to this county with his mother, Mrs. Christena Curtis, and stepfather, from Dayton, Ohio, settling in Lucas county, making this his home, where he has lived up until his death. Grandpa, as he was known to the community, was a kind and loving husband and father, always mindful of the need of others. Funeral services were held at the U. B. church at Norwood by Rev. Emery Curtis, of Des Moines, and he was laid to rest in the Norwood cemetery. The pallbearers were all grandchildren. Obituary courtesy of Charles M. Wright
