Daughter of John Crawford and Samantha Baxter OBITUARY THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, February 16, 1961 MANTIE MAY NINE Mantie May Nine, daughter of John and Samantha Crawford, was born in Lucas county, Iowa, Sept. 10, 1877, where she spent her entire life. Following a stroke she was taken to Martha's Rest Home in Chariton. She passed away at 5:30 p.m., Feb. 4, 1961, after a few days illness, at the age of 83 years, four months and 25 days. In early life she joined the United Brethren church of Norwood. She was united in marriage to Henry Clay Nine Dec. 9, 1896. He preceded her in death Oct. 18, 1956. A grandson also preceded her in death. To this union six children were born, all of whom survive: Virl of Indianola, Ervin of Davenport, Hazel Goode of Chariton, Eloise Byerly of Des Moines, Vera Curtis of Norwood and Vena Hancock of Davenport. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, one brother, Garfield Crawford of Norwood, three sisters, Hattie Nine and Bertha Snuggs of Chariton, and Lula Grater of Prineville, Ore., and a large circle of other relatives and friends. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her. Funeral services were conducted at the Miley Chapel Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. Harold Keeney of Iowa City officiated. Burial was at the Fletcher cemetery near Norwood.
