He emigrated westward in early life and chose Franklin County for his home. On the 15th day of October, 1854, he was united in marriage to Sarah Ann Ross. To this union were born eleven children, seven girls and four boys. Of this number Mary Griner, Dora Metzger, Katherine French, Stella Davison, Jennie Hildreth, Anna Clark, Ellen Smith, Frank, Andrew J. and Jeff are here today to pay the last tribute of respect to this pioneer father, James having preceded him to the land beyond. Uncle Johnny, as he was familiarly known, united with the M. E. Church at Wesley Chapel in 1878 under the pastorate of Brother Pierce. The deceased leaves to mourn their loss besides the aged widow, one brother, Geo. W. Croddy, one sister, Mrs. Anna Hite, ten children, 36 grandchildren and a large circle of friends. Much we might say of this pioneer citizen but eulogies are unnecessary. He did what we are each doing: he wrote his own obituary and preached his own funeral. The very fact that he successfully reared this large family is testimony sufficient of his worth in the community. Honesty, integrity and fair dealing with his fellow man were traits of character which he possessed. For 63 long years he and Sarah fought Life's battles together, sometimes mid smiles and sometimes mid tears, but for him life's battles are ended and as we consign his remains to the tomb we hear the poet say: The gay will laugh when thou are gone; The solemn brood of care plod on. And each one as before will chase his favorite phantom. Yet all these will leave their mirth and employment and come and make their bed with thee. [NOTE: The date of John's marriage to Sarah Ann Ross in his obituary is incorrect. The records at the Franklin Co. courthouse say they were married September 20, 1854.]
