Buried on December 23, 1892 Note: This is *NOT* the John D. Walter who served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War in the 1st Md Cavalry Regiment (CSA) in association with 1st VA Cavalry, K Company. The NPS database shows that there was a John D Walter (from Va, where he would have had to go to enlist) in Co K of the 1st Va Calvary Regiment which was comprised of almost exclusively men from Md. It was commanded for the longest time by Capt George R Gaither, Jr. The company was reorganized in May 1862 as a result of the expiration of the initial 1 year enlistment. It is after this reorganization that a John D Walter appears. Company K served throughout the war with the 1st Va Cavalry until 1864 when it was reassigned to the 1st Md Cavalry. There are a number of Walter’s, Water’s, Walters’ and Waters’ shown in the NPS data base. Only 3, however, are associated with Co K: John D Walter, [Greenberry] Waters and Thomas J Waters. The NPS database indicates that John D Walter left service as a Private (implying he was alive). In his 1900 book, ‘The Maryland Line in the Confederate Army’, Goldsborough devotes an entire section to Company K. He indicates that Greenberry Waters died at Fort McHenry, T. J. Waters survived and John Walters was killed with no amplification. Since I could find no further evidence of a John D Walter in 1870 and subsequent census’, this seems to be consistent (even though spellings were inconsistent).
