Born June 24, 1924 in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Mary Ocie (Romans) Hensell and John Milton "Jack" Hensell. He was also preceded by one brother, Charles "Chuck" Hensell; and one niece, Katherine Shrout. Surviving are his wife, Bette M. Hensell; one son, David D. Born June 24, 1924 in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Mary Ocie (Romans) Hensell and John Milton "Jack" Hensell. He was also preceded by one brother, Charles "Chuck" Hensell; and one niece, Katherine Shrout. Surviving are his wife, Bette M. Hensell; one son, David D. Hensell, Cumberland; one daughter, Jacquelin C. Van Sickle, Lusby and her husband Garth; four grandchildren, Shari Perlman and husband Donald, Heidi Hendrix and husband Doug, Christopher David Hensell, E8 Senior Chief, U.S. Navy and his wife Lisa, Danielle Nicol "Nikki" Plum and husband Travis; 12 great-grandchildren, Nathan, Luke, Miranda, Jon, Marissa, Charles, Amy, Hannah Hendrix, Annalise and Marianna Hensell, Ross Perlman and Haden Reese Plum. John worked for over 30 years at the Kelly-Springfield Tire Company. He started as a tire builder, then worked in tread design and retired as manager of Quality Control. He worked for the B & O Railroad for 11 years. John served with the 86th (Blackhawk) Infantry Division during World War II. He was in the military for 26 years. He received a battlefield commission during combat in Germany. After the German surrender the division returned to the States for re-equipping and additional training. They were then sent to the Philippines to prepare for the invasion of Japan. However the war ended without the necessity of an invasion. After the war, John joined the Maryland Army National Guard and rose to the ranks of battalion commander with the 11tth Infantry Regiment. The regiment later was reorganized as an Armor unit. He retired as a Lieutentant Colonel. After his retirement from the National Guard, the Maryland State Guard was reactivated and John was given a brevet promotion to Colonel and became the first commander of the 1st Battalion, First Brigade of that organization. He is a recipient of several military honors John was Exalted Ruler of Cumberland Lodge No 63 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks serving two terms, 1970-1971 and 1982-1983. He is currently a member of the Knoxville Tennessee Lodge. He is a member of the Queen City Lodge 131, A.F. & A.M. and the Cumberland Scottish Rite Bodies, Masons, Shriners, and the V.F.W. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m. The Queen City Lodge 131 will conduct services at 4 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 6 p.m. with the Rev. Diane Smith officiating. Contributions in memory of Mr. Hensell may be directed to Western Maryland Hospice Home Care, 1050 W. Industrial Blvd, Suite 19, Cumberland, MD 21502.
