Description	:	SABETHA -- John David Lortscher, 83, Bern, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at a Sabetha hospital. Mr. Lortscher farmed until he purchased the Hilt Elevator in Bern in 1948. He owned and operated the Lortscher Grain Co., where he did business as David Lortscher until 1975. He started the Lortscher Feed Lot, a commercial cattle feedlot, in 1961 and 1962 and returned to farming in 1975 after he sold the Lortscher Grain Co. to Gary and Betty Lortscher and the company became Lortscher Agri Service Inc. Read More	SABETHA -- John David Lortscher, 83, Bern, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at a Sabetha hospital. Mr. Lortscher farmed until he purchased the Hilt Elevator in Bern in 1948. He owned and operated the Lortscher Grain Co., where he did business as David Lortscher until 1975. He started the Lortscher Feed Lot, a commercial cattle feedlot, in 1961 and 1962 and returned to farming in 1975 after he sold the Lortscher Grain Co. to Gary and Betty Lortscher and the company became Lortscher Agri Service Inc. Mr. Lortscher farmed until 1987, when he became a full-time consultant for Lortscher Agri Service Inc., a position he maintained until his death. He also had continued to farm part-time. He was born May 31, 1918, in the Salem Township in Richardson County, Neb., the son of Fred and Lortscher and Pearl Haxton Lortscher. Mr. Lortscher was a member of the Bern School Board, the Bern City Council, Knights of Pythias and a 52-year member of the Kansas Grain and Feed Dealers Association. He also was a member of the Bern United Methodist Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, trustee, treasurer and on the building fund committee. He married Marjorie Elizabeth Welsh on May 5, 1940. She survives. Other survivors include a sister, Doris Swaim, Camdenton, Mo.; a brother, Donald Lortscher, National City, Calif.; a son, R. Gary Lortscher, Bern; a daughter, Alice Lortscher Chauza, Dallas; four grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the United Methodist Church in Bern. Relatives and friends will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the David Lortscher Scholarship of the Bern Community Support Foundation earmarked for the David Lortscher Scholarship, sent in care the State Bank of Bern, 66408; or in care of the Bern Community Support Foundation, attention Ronda Haverkamp, 402 Maine, P.O.
