Early Friday morning the people here were greatly surprised to hear of the sudden death of John Dinan, who lived five miles south of Ralston. About 4 o'clock in the morning one of the boys was awakened by his father struggling for breath. As soon as possible restoratives were applied but were unsuccessful in bringing him from the stupor he was in and death came as a sleep without a struggle. John Dinan had lived on the farm where he died for the past twenty five years, and was known far and near as a man of integrity and worth. He was a kind hearted neighbor, always ready to lend a helping hand, and by the life he lived had won the respect and confidence of all his acquaintances. Through his industry and hard work he was successful in securing for himself and family a handsome property. He leaves to mourn his untimely death three sons, Jake, Tom and Al. Tom and Al having always lived at home. They have the sympathy of the entire community in this, their hour of affliction. The funeral services were held in Scranton Monday morning conducted by Father O'Farrell of Jefferson, assisted by Father Kennedy of Grand Junction, the latter preaching the sermon which was a fitting tribute to the life of the departed one. The funeral services were held from the Catholic church Monday morning. Biographical and historical record of Greene and Carroll counties, Iowa Page 249 - John Dinan, one of the self made men of Greene County and an enterprising farmer of Scranton Township, where he resides on Section 19 is a native of Ireland, born in County Limerick in 1840. His parents Thomas and Kate Dinan, never left their native country. They had a family of 7 children, our subject being the sixth child and the only one who came to America. He left Ireland during the war of the Rebellion and landed at New York City in very limited circumstances but possessed of a stout heart and a determination to succeed in life. He lived at New Haven, CT several years and was there married to Miss Letitia Lynch who was born in County Derry, Ireland. Four children have been born to them, three of whom are living, all natives of New Haven, CT. Thomas born Dec 4, 1864; John, born May 24, 1867, and Albert born Sept 24, 1871. Their son Robert was born in Benton Co, IA May 5, 1874 and died in the same county Jan 24, 1878. Mr Dinan came with his family to Iowa in 1871 and lived in Benton County several years. They afterward resided in Story County and from there came to Greene County settling on his present farm in the spring of 1880. His farm of 160 acres is one of the best in his neighborhood and almost entirely under cultivation and is located half on section 19 Scranton Township and half on section 25 of Richland Township in Carroll Co, which he has acquired by persevering, toil, and energy, combined with good management and by his fair and honorable dealings, he has won the confidence and respect of all who know him. Politically Mr Dinan affiliates with the Democratic party. The family are members of the Roman Catholic church.
