John Dwight Pugh was born September 10, 1918 in Logan Township, Hand County, to Arthur Stephen and Andrea (Jacobsen) Pugh. He grew up on a farm and graduated from Miller High School in 1937. He left Miller in 1941 and worked in aircraft factories in California and Nebraska. Later he joined the Signal Corp and was trained in electronics. While attending school at Kansas State College in Manhattan, he met Ellabeth DeYoung. They were married October 10, 1943 and left for Fort Wayne, Ind., where he was assigned to test electronic equipment for national defense. After World War II, they lived in Manhattan, Kan., before moving to Miller January 1, 1947, where he started Pugh Electric Sales and Service. Several years later, he closed the retail store and changed the name to Pugh Electrical Construction. From then until his retirement in 1984, he and his crews did major commercial wiring throughout South Dakota. In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Scarlett (Mel) Pflugrad of Edmonds, Wash., and Sass Pugh of Miller; one grandson, Lance (Katherine) Leonard; and one brother, Charles, of rural Miller.
