Rees Answers Final Summons Monday Long Illness Ends Life of Clerk of Court at Home In This City- Friends At Funeral Pay Last Respects To Departed Escorted by a guard of honor comprised of members of the Knights of Pythias, of which he was a valued member, his casket wrapped in the American flag which he had enlisted to serve, John Edgar Rees was yesterday carried to his last resting place in Mountain View Cemetery. Rev. A. A. Holbeck read the services for the dead in the Lutheran church, which was filled to overflowing with sorrowing friends. The many floral offerings also attested to the esteem in which the community held Mr. Rees. All business was suspended in the city during the service. Mrs. Floyd Bailey sang "Asleep in Jesus," Only Waiting," and "Lead Kindly Light." Mrs. Cheryl V. O'Leary accompanied her. The pall bearers were: E. H. Ellingson, Harold Boe, C. A. Bishop, Theo. T. Olson, F. M. Lamp, and D. J. Walvoord. Services in Mountain View were conducted by David Hopkins, grand keeper of records and seals of the order of the Knights of Pythias who with Sam White, representative to the supreme lodge, came from Butte to attend the funeral. For a number of years, Mr. Rees had suffered from diabetics, and three weeks ago he became suddenly very ill. Though he made a valiant struggle to overcome the inroads of the malady, the end came shortly before noon, of Monday, when surrounded by his family, he passed on. He is survived by his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Glend Tangen of Portland, Ore., Mrs. Emmett J. Deegan; and five sons John, Alva, Washington, D.C.; Robert, Vule, Wayne, and Billie, who lived at the family home on the west side. He is the last of a family of five children. John Edgar Rees was born in the town of Feesburg, Ohio, Jan. 20, 1864, and spent his early school years there. He was a schoolmate of William Howard Taft. At the age of 16, he entered college and took normal training at Lebanon, Ohio. Idly, for a vacation, he came to Big timber about 1886 to visit his sister, Mrs. Ellis, who had come here the previous year to teach school. He taught here for a short time, as substitute for his sister, in the white frame school which stood on McLeod street just south of where the Commerical bank building now is. The school needed another instructor and Mr. Rees was proffered the position, which he declined. He taught for several terms in Kentucky and Texas, during his early manhood, becoming a government instructor to officers' children in various forts when he enlisted in the army. He also saw service along the Mexican border. He served five years during which time he saw an Indian uprising of note known as the Geronimo campaign. Returning to Big Timber about 1890, for two years he was principal of the public school giving his pupils first-year high school work as they finished grade studies. It was during this time that he met and married Miss Emma Brandenburg, who was a resident here. He returned to Ohio, his old home, but again came west, this time to Bozeman, later coming to Big Timber where he has since resided except for a short period of ranching. Always interested in educational matters, he taught and served on school boards for many years. He purchased a ranch which is now known as the Scholten ranch but again came to the city. His diverse talents led him to the city clerkship, which office he held until he was elected as clerk of the court for Sweet Grass county. (the rest of the article of not found.)
