John was born Nov. 13, 1923, in Fort Madison, the son of Morton and Mary Bremhorst Amborn. He graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1941. John was born Nov. 13, 1923, in Fort Madison, the son of Morton and Mary Bremhorst Amborn. He graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1941. Following his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he worked as a machinist apprentice for the Santa Fe Railway of Fort Madison and Chicago. On June 29 1943, he married his high school sweetheart, Catherine Gockel. From 1949 until 1972, John was a professional photographer. He owned and operated his own studio, served as president of the Professional Photographers of Iowa, and presented programs on photography throughout the Midwest. In 1961, he earned his Master of Photography degree from the Professional Photographers of America. His work is part of the Permanent Loan Collection of the Professional Photographers of America. Additionally, two of his prints were selected for exhibition at the Kodak Pavilion of the 1964 New York World's Fair. He was an active participant in civic organizations in Fort Madison, which included serving as a member of the Fort Madison Industrial Development Corporation and the Commercial Development Corporation; as a board member of the Fort Madison Community Hospital, the Community Concert Association, and the Country Club; and as president of the Fort Madison Rotary. In 1959, John was honored as Fort Madison's Most Exemplary Father. From 1972 until 1981, he was a real estate broker with Amborn & Feightner Realtors in Fort Madison. He was also co-owner of Gaslight Alley Gifts in Fort Madison from 1969 to 1984 and in Cedar Rapids from 1981 to 1994. John is survived by Catherine, his wife of 61 years; three daughters and their husbands, Catherine and Martin Roach of Cedar Rapids, Margaret and Edward Dull of McKinney, Texas, and Nancy and Frank Lochner of Marion; 11 grandchildren, Heather, Shannon, Jeff, Maggie, Abby, Christi, Carrie, Jonathan, Courtney, Sarah and Katie; five great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Jay, Joey, Tommy and Ashton; and a sister-in-law, Maxine Amborn. He was preceded in death by a beloved son, John Robert; his parents, Morton and Mary; a sister, Bernadine; and two brothers, the Rev. Robert and Richard. A celebration of his life will be held at 10 AM Friday at All Saints Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. David O'Connor.
