Amborn, 74, retired pastor of Sacred Heart Church, died at 12:55 a.m. Monday, Jan. 24, 1994, at the Fort Madison home of his sister, Bernardine Amborn. Fr. Amborn had had cancer since 1970, and was seriously ill the past three months. He was born Feb. 16, 1919, in Fort Madison, the son of Morton H. and Mary C. (Bremhorst) Amborn, and grew up in the Sacred Heart parish. He attended the parish grade school. He served as pastor of Sacred Heart from 1981 to December 1993. He went to the Pontifical College Josephinum in Worthington, Ohio, for high school, and remained there through college and major seminary studies. He was ordained there on April 30, 1944, by Archbishop Amleto Cicognani, the apostolic delegate in the United States. Fr. Amborn served as an assistant at Holy Family parish in Davenport from 1944 to 1947, assistant at St. Patrick parish in Burlington from 1947 to 1952, and assistant at Our Lady of Lourdes parish in Bettendorf from 1952 to 1958. In 1957, he was named director and business manager of the newly formed Assumption High School in Davenport. He organized the merging of that city's two Catholic high schools – Immaculate Conception Academy for girls and St. Ambrose Academy for boys – into a single, co-institutional school with a boys' wing on one side and a girl's wing on the other. When Assumption opened in 1958, he stayed as business manager until 1962, when he was named chaplain for Ottumwa Heights College in Ottumwa and pastor of St. Mary parish in Eddyville. In 1964, Fr. Amborn was named pastor of St. Mary's in Oxford, remaining there until 1981 when he was appointed to his home parish. He has been a member of the diocesan Priests' Senate, the diocesan Pastoral Council, and the Building Commission. H was also director of the Cana Conference, a marriage enrichment movement formerly widespread in the church. He was also a Faithful Friar of the Fourth Degree, Knights of Columbus; spiritual director of the Immaculate Conception Presidium of the Legion of Mary; and spiritual director of the Guadalupe Society. He was active in scouting and was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout with the former Sacred Heart Church Troop No. 7. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include two brothers, Richard Amborn of Fort Madison and John E. Amborn of Cedar Rapids; his sister, Bernardine Amborn of Fort Madison; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday January 27, at Sacred Heart Church. Officiated were The Most Reverend William Franklin, principal celebrant and homilist, the Most Reverend Gerald O'Keefe, retired bishop of the Davenport Diocese, and priests of the diocese. Burial was in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Fort Madison. There was a ceremony of arrival at Sacred Heart Church at 2 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a Rosary recited by Sacred Heart Altar & Rosary Society. At 7 p.m. Wednesday, the Knights of Columbus recited a rosary at Sacred Heart, followed at 7:30 by a Christian Wake Service. Memorial contributions were left at Sacred Heart Church. King-Lynk Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
