Everyone called him "Mike", except for his 3 sisters, they called him Johnny, as a result I never called him Mike. He attended Bonesteel High School and graduated in 1944. He was engaged in farming with his father until 1951, when he entered the Marine Corps with Ray O'Grady on Jan 30, 1951 1951. They enlisted into the Marines in Minneapolis, MN., and served in Korea during the Korean War. On April 30, 1951 PFC John E Darcy Service # 1174196 is listed on the Monthly Personnel Roster, Training and Replacement Command, MB at Camp J H Pendelton, Oceanside, Calif. In Oct 1951 he was assigned to: Co. I, 3rd Bn. 7th Mar 1st Mar Div and passed through Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Name: John Edward Darcy Muster Date: Oct 1951 Rank: Private First Class Station: Co I 3Rd Bn 7Th Mar 1St Mar Div, Mri Pearl While serving in Korea, in Dec 1951 he was wounded. and he received the Purple Heart for his actions. He was in San Franciso, California, he was discharged from the Marines in Jan 1952. Ray O'Grady lost a leg and was dischared also. Uncle John and Grandma Darcy moved to Yankton, SD in 1952. He married Dorothy Ann Ryan on April 30, 1955. They were married by Father Riley at Yankton. Ray O'Grady and Margaret Ryan were best man and maid of honor; Frank Kuzela and RoseAnn Silvernail (Dorthothy's niece) were attendants. John and Dorothy had 3 children. A few things I remember about Uncle John are: I remember him being in the Marine Corp. and writing to him often, I kind-of think my mother made me do it. Part of his address was: John E. Darcy, 1174196 USMC. I must have written him often to remember it so long afterwards. I remember he had a car, with seat covers. Apparently Uncle John enjoyed playing tricks on people. I remember him putting some kind of an electric buzzer under the seat covers to surprise his passenger. He was wounded in Korea and had difficulty with shrapnel, in his arm and shoulder many years later. I remember he liked to drink beer. So did my mom, Gladys Darcy Taylor, Mom and Uncle John used to go down to the Ice House in Yankton and get a quart of beer, they could sit in the car in front of the Ice House in Yankton in the evening and drink a beer. I also remember Uncle John made homemade beer, which mom and dad helped him drink. I remember when Uncle John and Dorothy were dating and being very happy when they got married. When mom and dad bought a house in December of 1956 in Hartington, they had Uncle John come to Hartington and he rewired the house and put in new light fixtures. Uncle John was an electrician. The wounds he received during the Korean War bothered him in later life. It was during the 1970s and 1980s that shrapnel began working out of his arm and shoulder. It did cause some nerve damage and he lost some use of that arm. In 1974 John retired and he and Dorthy moved to to Harlingen, Cameron County, Texas. They lived there a couple of years and then returned to Yankton, SD. Dorthy told me they didn't like Harlingen. John and Dorothy have 3 living children Mary Sue, Kathy, and John L. Darcy and an unnamed infant which died at birth. John Edward Darcy died Nov 3, 1990 from a heart attack at his home in Yankton, Yankton Co,, SD. It was very sudden and unexpected. He is buried in Yankton, Yankton Co., SD. in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. His family still lives in Yankton. Inscription on Tomb Stone: Children: Mary, Kathy, John Darcy
