Wissler was the first Wissler to settle here and bought farmland in Richardson Co. in the Speiser precinct. The farm was listed as 205 acres on the 1896 plat map and was located east of the Nemaha river near Kenter's Ford. (Wm. Luginbill had farms near by) The 1900 US census has him born in Switzerland in April of 1850. He was Married to Mary C. in about 1873 (which is probably right as it puts their 50th in 1923) She is listed as born in Missouri and 10 children are listed on this census. THE LINCOLN STAR. Sept. 3,1923. (Special to the Star.) TABLE ROCK,Neb.Sept. 3- Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Wissler who live a few miles southeast of here, celebrated their golden wedding last week with over one hundred guests in attendance. J. Edward Wissler and Mary Luginbill were married in August, 1873, at Falls City, Rev. Greenmiller of the Lutheran church officiating. The journey from the home to the wedding at Falls City was made in a lumber wagon, the trip each way occupying most of the day. Mr. and Mrs. Wissler are the parents of nine living children, twenty-five grandchildren and one great-grandson. All of the children were present except Fred and John. JOHN EDWARD WISSLER John Edward Wissler, a son of Jacob and Elizabeth Wissler was born April 27, 1850 at Luzelflu, Switzerland and passed away September 26, 1937, at his home near Humboldt, Nebraska, at the age of 87 years, 5 months and 1 day. When 20 years of age he came to the United States, coming directly to Sabetha, Kansas. Almost immediately he started work for Sam Beutler, who then lived eight and one-half miles south of Humboldt, and although Mr. Wissler loved his homeland, yet among the new surroundings he chose to live his life, and he became a naturalized citizen of the United States. Mr. Wissler worked in and around the Four Mile neighborhood for a few years after which he and William Luginbill started farming for themselves. During this time he met Mary Luginbill. This friendship culminated in their marriage at Falls City, Neb., on August 21, 1873, after which he and his wife established a home about one-half mile east of the Four Mile church where the family lived until 1895. The family then removed to the present location where Mr. Wissler has spent the remainder of his life. To this union 12 children were born: six daughters and six sons. Tow daughters, Elizabeth and Sofia and three sons, Fred, William and Edward preceded Mr. Wissler in death. Those who remain to morun their loss are John Wissler, Whiting, Kan.; Rudy Wissler, Humboldt, Neb.; Charles Wissler, Crowley, Colo.; Mrs. Lizzie Hunzeker, DuBois, Neb.; Mrs. Ettie Hunzeker, Humboldt, Neb.; Mrs. Maggie Hunzeker, DuBois, Neb.; and Mrs. Marie Griffith, Seneca. Two brothers, Godfred Wissler of the state of Washington and Robert Wissler, DuBois; one sister, Mrs. Eliza Reist, Bern; 34 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren and many relatives and friends. His wife Mary, also preceded him in death, having passed away November 29, 1924. While a child living in Switzerland he was baptized and confirmed in the German Lutheran faith and upon coming to this community, he joined the Four Mile German church and has remained an active member until the time of his death. Mr. Wissler known as one of the pioneers of this section, having lived through the hardships of early pioneer days. He lived for more then 67 years in this community and for 42 years on the Wissler homestead where he died. Mr. Wissler was very active in community life and he was always interested in public problems. He served as chairman of the drainage ditch committee at the time the drainage ditch was just put through Richardson and Pawnee counties and it was largely because of the interest he took that the project was accomplished. Mr. Wissler lived an exemplary life. He always took an interest in his family and he will be greatly missed by the family, near relatives and a host of friends.
