WISSLER Robert Frederick Wissler was born Nov. 15, 1854, at Lutzelfluk, Canton Bern, Switzerland, and died at his home in DuBois after a brief illness Jan. 21, 1944, at the age of 90 years, 2 months and 6 days. Bob, as he was affectionately called by his friends, spent his boyhood days in his native land, fitting himself for life and its tasks as most boys of his time. He was one of a family of sisters and three brothers, only one of whom survives. At the age of 16 he was confirmed in the Reformed Lutheran church and adhered to its principles until his summons came. June 2, 1882, he was married to Elizabeth Housberger, and to this union 12 children were born, John, Walter, Will, Sarah, Charles, Minnie, Amanda, Lydia, Sophia, Alfred, Elmer, and George, all of whom except two survive their father. Sarah died in January, 1916, at the age of 29 and George in March, 1919, aged 18. This indeed has been a large and happy family. Theirs has been long and blissful union and in their declining years they have been a comfort to each other. June 2, 1932, they celebrated their fiftieth anniversary. We were glad to congratulate them when, on June 2, 1942, they again passed a cycle in their life's history when 60 years of this union had gone by. Their honeymoon was spent in historic places we now know about, Brenner Pass and the William Tell chapel. Mr. Wissler came with his parents, brothers and sisters, and his wife to the United States in the winter of 1883 and located near Humboldt, where for 20 years they lived in the Four Mile community, experiencing the hardships, trials and tests of the early settlers. Interesting are the stories they were able to tell. The children were indeed fortunate to be able to have had this first-hand experience from which to draw and shape their lives. Life has not always been easy for Mr. Wissler, yet his integrity, fortitude and unquenchable spirit have carried him through as they did many another pioneer. One by one our early residents are passing, and all too soon. From this family have gone several to serve their country, among whom is one son, Maj. Alfred E. Wissler, and eight grandsons. We have come to love and appreciate his life and catch a challenge to carry on. His jovial chuckle has made him beloved by many. Both he and his gracious companion have blessed the lives of many by their example of industry, perseverance, courage and hope. He was honest, upright and friendly, fair in his dealings, and conscientious in what he thought was right. He will be greatly missed, for he has lived among us for the life span of many. He leaves behind as he enters another world, his splendid and beloved companion and devoted wife, and ten children, John, Walter and Will of DuBois, Charles of Denver, Mrs. Minnie McGhee of Centralia, Kan., Mrs. Amanda Korber of Pawnee City, Mrs. Lydia Buck of Omaha, Mrs. Sophia Schute of Bern, Kan., Maj. Alfred E. of Seattle, Wash., and Elmer of DuBois. Also one sister, Mrs. Eliza Reist of Bern, Kan., 26, grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Monday afternoon, with Rev. Otis Webb in charge. Interment was in the Four Mile cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons, Kenneth and George Wissler, Will Bredemeier, Wm. Scheidegger, Marvin Hartman, and Lyle Farwell.
