ARDEY. One of the Most Popular Young Men in the State a Victim of Appendicitis. Special to The State. Fort Mill, May 3.--Mr. John Erskine Ardrey of this place, a son of Mr. John W. Ardrey, died tonight at the home of his father from appendicitis. Mr. Ardrey was in his 24th year. He graduated at the South Carolina college in the class of 1902. He was very popular while in college and was highly esteemed by a large circle of friends all over the State, who will regret to know that he has been cut down in the bloom of his young manhood. He leaves a father, mother, three sisters and two brothers, and many other relatives to mourn his untimely death. Mr. Ardrey was a consistent member of the Presbyterian church at which church the funeral services will be conducted tomorrow. Mr. Ardrey was attacked on Sunday, April 26, and from the first his friends were uneasy. On Friday the symptoms became very alarming and surgical aid was summoned. An immediate operation was advised. This operation revealed acute, gangrenous appendicitis, the appendix having already ruptured and peritonitis resulted. On account of this condition no hope of his recovery was entertained, and although everything was done for him that surgical skill and loving friends could do it was all in vain. Fort Mill, May 4.--The remains of Mr. John Erskine Ardrey were interred this afternoon in the family plot in the cemetery in Fort Mill by the side of his sister, Lillie, who died in 1890. The funeral services were conducted at the house by the Rev. Dr. J. H. Thornwell, assisted by Rev. Dr. J. B. Mack, who in eloquent but simple language told of the pressing need that the Master must have had for the young man in his vineyard on the other side. The large house, veranda and part of the yard were crowded with sympathizing friends, who followed the remains to the cemetery. More than a wagon load of cut roses were placed on and around the newly made grave. The pallbearers, who were chosen from among the young companions of Mr. Ardrey, were Messrs. J. A. Withers, J. L. Watson, J. T. McGregor, Duncan Wolf, D. G. Thompson and S. L. Meacham. All of the business houses in town were closed during the services.
