Stricken with tragedy--the death of a boy and the destruction of their home by fire--the mother, a widow, and eight surviving children faced a bleak Christmas, but they found they were not alone. "It has been a wonderful expression of Christian charity," Msgr. Joseph Suneg, Pastor of St. Margaret Mary's Church, said Tuesday. A weekend fund drive at the church brought donations totaling nearly six thousand dollars. More than eight hundred dollars was sent to Creighton Prep where the victim, John DeMott, 15, was a sophomore. Even the grave site at Calvary Cemetery was donated. Early last Friday, flames roared through the home at 104 South Fifty-Third Street where Mrs. Marie DeMott and six of her nine children were sleeping. John, trapped near his third-floor beedroom, did not escape. The house and all belongings were destroyed. "The response was terrific. I've never seen anything like it," said the Very Rev. Vincent L. Decker, S.J., President of Creighton Prep. Hundreds of students contributed clothing and household goods. After spending the week at the home of Dr. F. D. Donahue, Mrs. DeMott and five children--three others are away at school--accepted an invitation to use the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Frenking until a permanent place is found. Why the overwhelming response? "It's probably many things," said Father Decker. "It's Christmas time. People feel like giving, like helping others. But more important," he said, "is that these are wonderful people. They are marvelous kids. They are loved." Chief Fire Investigator Joseph Pluta emphasized that it was a boiler hot water pipe rather than a water heater pipe which caused Friday's Fire which took the life of John.
