Marie Julia Ryan deMott, known as Rye, celebrated her 95th birthday with 113 family and friends on Sunday, September 1, 2013. The pink themed celebration as was evident by the beautiful pink flowers and delicious pink frosted cake was held at the Renaissance Mansion in Omaha, Nebraska. The guests were treated to live violin music as Rye graciously greeted each and everyone throughout the evening. Six of her great grand children were present and three of her four living children, as five of her children are deceased. Steve a Maryknoll priest was director of Maryknoll communications and died at the age of 57. Peter who was a peace activist died while trimming trees. Marie Julia Ryan was born on September 1, 1918 in Iowa, the eldest daughter of Mary O'Meara and Eulogius William Ryan [note: this appears to be an error]. She was a 1940 graduate of Duchesne College in Omaha, Nebraska. Sr. Connie Campbell, RSCJ was her college roommate. In the mid 1940's Rye met and married John Irving deMott. The newlyweds settled in Minnesota and had nine children. While living in Minnesota on a 600 acre farm that her husband had inherited, John tragically died two days before Christmas in 1955. Rye became a widow with nine children to raise at the age of 39. Three years later Rye a speech and drama teacher decided to move the children to Omaha, Nebraska. Rye was the activities director for the Religious of the Sacred Heart assisted living community at Duchesne for 10 years in the 70's. She spent over 25 years teaching and tutoring at Duchesne Academy. While she has had her share of grief, Rye's deep faith has been her underlying strength throughout her life. It was her custom to walk over a mile to St. Cecelia Cathedral and attend daily Mass before heading to work at the Duchesne Academy. J. Ryan announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Marie Julia, to John Irving DeMott of Washington, D. C. Mr. DeMott is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Irving P. DeMott of Crookston, Minn. , The wedding will take place Oct. 21 at St. Anthony's church in Washington. DeMott Today In Washington D. C. Miss Marie Julia Ryan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Timothy John Ryan of Carroll, became the bride of John Irving DeMott, son of Mr. and Mrs. Irving P. DeMott of Crookston, Minn., in a 9 o'clock ceremony this morning at St. Anthony's church, Washington, D. C. The Rev. Father Bailey officiated at the single ring service. The bride's brother, Joe E. Ryan, United States Naval Reserve, gave her In marriage. She wore a two- piece gold wool dress suit with mink fur trim, brown hat with veil and brown accessories. Her corsage consisted of white orchld. She carried a white prayer book given to her by the president of Duchesne college, Omaha, of which she is an alumna. Her strand of pearl beads was borrowed from a Duchesne college classmate, Mrs. F. D. Donahue, of Corpus Christi, Tex. Miss Virginia Johnston of Washington, D. C, another Duchesne college classmate, was the maid of honor. She wore a pale blue wool dress with brown accessories and a corsage of American Beauty roses and baby breath. The bridegroom had chosen his brother, Stephen DeMott of Crookston, Minn., as his best man. Nuptial vows were taken before an altar decorated with white chrysanthemums and palms. The musical program included Lohengrin's Wedding March, Gounod's "Ave Maria", "O Lord. I Am Not Worthy", "On This Day, O Beautiful Mother", and "Panis Angelicus". At 11 o'clock [indecipherable, probably referring to reception] decorated with the bride's three-tier cake and white chrysanthemums. The place cards were handpainted. After a short wedding trip, Mr, and Mrs. DeMott will reside in Washington, where they will be at home after Oct. 30. Mrs. DeMott, a graduate of St. Angela academy, Carroll, received her B.A. degree from Duchesne college. She was president of the Duchesne college players for two years and was a Mardi Gras princess in 1910. She has been employed on the American Red Cross staff at the American university, Washington. Mr. DeMott, who is an interior decorator, received his B.A. degree at St. John's university, Collegeville, Minn. He has had one year of graduate work at Chicago university and two years at Catholic university, Washington, D. C.
