John Benda Sr., 85, passed away a t the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ed Vratisovsky at Marshalltown where he was confined to his bed for 12 weeks. Mr. Benda had made his home with his daughter since last fall. John Frank Benda, the son of Martin and Anna Svoboda, was born June 20, 1865 at Filsen, Czechslovakia. When he was three years old his parents died and he was raised by his brother, Charles. In 1882 when he was 18 years old, Mr. Benda, came to America and settled in the Vining vicinity where he farmed and ran a threshing rig. On March 13, 1889 he was married to Miss Katherine Hach of Chelsea To this union eight children were born. The family lived at Helena, Toledo and Chelsea. At the latter place they operated a hardware store for some time. He was preceded In death by the oldest child, Libbie, who died in infancy, a son, Frank, in 1928 and a son, Edward, in 1946 and his wife, Catherine in October 1947. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Ed (Lottie) Vratisovsky of Marshalltown and Mrs. Emil (Ella) Rebik of Tama; three sons, William of Davenport, Harry of Chelsea and John, Jr, of Marshalltown; 14 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 7, at 2 p. m. at Hrabak's funeral home with the Rev. J. W. Kasa officiating. Singers were Mrs. Anton Kroulik and Mrs. William A. Stanke, accompanied by Mrs. Charles Veit. Songs were "Old Rugged Cross," and "In the Garden." Casket bearers were Frank Musel, Emil Behounek, Joseph Kratoska, Joseph Benesh, Joseph Formanek Sr., and Fred E. Vitek. Burial was in the National cemetery near Vining.
